Title: What parts do I need to buy to replace the front crank shaft seal 230sl
Post by: County Guy on February 28, 2019, 23:36:18
Hi.  I want to replace the front crank shaft seal on my 230sl but I'm confused about what I need.  I have two numbers from Mercedes.

a 'collar spacer' : 108-031-02-51
a 'crank seal'  :  008-997-05-47

Are these parts correct?  Do I need any others?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Probably correct numbers but I don't have my parts book in front of me. Look at your crank gear and if worn you might want to replace that too since everything is already off. That may require a bit more disassembly though. ;)

Hi,
you might also want to check and replace the two dowel pins, that hold the counterweight in place at the front end of the crankshaft.
They cost very little and if you sit there on a sunday afternoon, ready for reassembly without them....

Pins aren't a bad idea. Mine were buggered up a bit from a previous PO when I went to put it back together. Even with brand new pins, I had to LIGHTLY file (with the emphasis on lightly) the pins to get the counterweight on with a snug fit. Mostly on the ends for a very slight starting taper. It took many trial fits before it was right. I just didn't want to smash it on like it was done before.

Most importantly, and has been said before, the counterweight only goes on one way. But it is so close it is easy to do it wrong. Be sure to index before you take it off. You will sleep better at night.

Were you able to find the crank spacer? I am having trouble locating one.

I had trouble with the dowel pins also, I recommend replacing them.

Stupid question:

Can you replace the front seal without taking the crank out, i.e.: with engine still installed in car?

Yes, you can do it with the engine in the car. Remove hood, radiator, and front engine components.
