Title: Engine mount for early 230SL
Post by: Charles 230SL on February 16, 2019, 15:27:03
Hello,
I'm in the middle of replacing the engine mounts on my '64 230SL and I've got the early engine mount setup shown below (note the early setup has a stud threaded into the underside of the mount rather than a bolt).

I need the rubber buffer indicated by the red arrow and I think the rubber bumper is MB part no. 121 987 0039. Can someone help me confirm this part number?  I mistakenly ordered part no. 121 987 0339 without realizing that this particular bumper is for the later 230/250/280SL engine mounts. I'd hate to order the wrong rubber buffer again. thanks in advance, charles

Just replaced these a few months ago, but ordered the pieces as a set from MB Classic Center. If you call them, talk to Charles or Tom, and they can help you get the right part based on your VIN.

I can confirm that number 121 987 00 39 from the edition B 230SL parts book, but the book also shows replacement by 121 990 00 50 and subsequently by 121 220 00 72. So maybe safer to contact the Classic Center as suggested. In the book the part is described as 'rubber buffer', part # 8, Group 22/24, Table 11.

The 121 part number sounds like the trans mount which is the same part as used on 190SL engine mounts.

Appears this is the same bumper that goes on the early 230sl transmission mount -  AuthenticClassics shows it as MB 116 987 0641: https://www.authenticclassics.com/Rubber-Buffer-for-Engine-Mount-Bellows-190SL-230SL-p/auth-008806.htm.

What the EPC says:

A121 987 0039 replaced by A 116 987 0647 - the correct number is A 116 987 0641, as Charles pointed above. Fottnote is the same.

and this one has a footnote:
Up to ident. no.: 042 012864

That is, perhaps, what you are looking for. For Europe: available, costs about $4.

thanks Pawel,
A search on Mercedespartscenter.com doesn't find anything with A116 987 0647, but it does bring up 116 987 0641 as a 'rubber ring' which agrees with what AuthenticClassics shows. I think 116 987 0641 is what I need.
kinda wonder if EPC misprinted that last digit as a "7" when it should have been a "1". I'll go ahead and order a couple of these - nothing like getting halfway through a job only to find you've got to order more parts and wait another week for them to arrive,,oh well.

My mistake re-typing from EPC, sorry - "1" it is!

I will ammend the previous post and sorry for trouble!

I know how upsetting it might be to wait for some minor part with wrapping up a bigger work!

I believe you also may have to replace the rear mount as well to compensate for the increased height of the engine tilt after replacing only the two front mounts.  There is very little clearance between the bonnet and the oil cap. I tested the clearance with a piece of cooking dough.

Yes, I replaced all transmission mount rubber & hardware in Nov 2017. After installing the new engine mounts I added a 5mm washer under the trans mount for drivetrain alignment.

Yes the spacer between the mounting plate and rear transmission mount is often missing. 5mm seems to be the most common thickness, although the parts books show various sizes.

incidentally, this is the 5mm spacer (MB part no#136 224 05 06) I purchased with the other trans mount hardware in Nov 2017.  I anticipated needing it (the spacer) when I got around to replacing the engine mounts - which I did a couple of weeks ago.

Was yours missing all together?

yes.  When I installed (only) the new transmission mount I didn't need a 5mm spacer to align the trans/driveshaft.  After installing new engine mounts I needed to add the spacer.
