Title: Need help with a hood prop on 1967 250 SL
Post by: rockingchairmotors on February 14, 2019, 00:11:42
Hello

Purchased my first 113 a few months ago.  A 1967 250 SL.  First issues (I'm sure of many) is my hood prop.  Mine is bent and doesn't hold the hood up.  When I open the hood it slams against the front fender.  I am not sure if pieces are missing.  Can someone post a picture of one working correctly and possibly a parts schematic of it.  Anyone have a possible source for another one.  I have not checked through Mercedes as of yet.  Thanks in advance for the help.

Jeff

Jeff:

Others will probably be of more help, but I don't really understand the issue. The hood is being held up with a "torsion bar" which acts like a tension spring. Opening is limited by a band. You torsion spring - the long rod that goes across the inside of the hood and supports in a block on the left side - is probably not installed correctly. :-[

The left side of the rod is fed forward into the hood frame. Secure all three of the plastic guides around the torsion rod. Next rotate the free end counter-clockwise. You'll see a small hole in the outside frame of the hood, You can use a "S-hook" to safely hold the loose end of the rod in place until you are ready to put work in the plastic guide below.

AS Joe mentioned. Make very sure that the S hook is a very heavy piece of metal.
I made mine from Old bed springs that were used back in the fifties.
A lot of you younger people probably don,t even know what the old bed springs look like.
Ask your parents or relatives that over 70 years of age.
It is dangerous if the s hook is made out of lite metal. It will spring back and cause serious damage to you.
Do you agree Joe?

That right Tom.  You can injure yourself and damage the hood.
