Mark:
I have been using this. I got this for work on my motorcycles. The large end works pretty well on the SL

I guess it would indeed be important to know if the head is off the motor. Seems not so. If the head is still on the engine, the valve needs to be kept from descending into the CC when compressing the springs. Much more difficult to do. I found that compressed air does not always work that well.

One old trick is to feed a rope into the cylinder via the spark plug hole

I use either the Jack Sealy-type compressor (was a gift from Naj, thanks again Naj!), or a large screwdriver, to depress the valve spring enough to slip the rocker arm out. Then I can get good purchase on the ball adjuster. Never worried about the valve somehow coming loose and falling down this way.

It wasn't about the valve coming loose and falling into the CC. I was thinking of the procedure to remove the keepers. I guess it doesn't really matter in this case, as he just wants to take the rocker arms off.

Thanks Everyone,
I did complete the valve adjust on the car. I was able to lift with hex wrench the rocker arms out of the way to get a 17mm socket on the stuck valve adjust screws... I kinda read the valve guide tour as one needs to compression the spring to life the rocker out of the way..who knew it was that easy. O'well all is good with my 1970 280SL...once the rain clears...back on the road.
