Hi All,
I'm looking for a shorter version of the protective rubber sleeve covering the breather tube and water pipe in the engine bay. I previously purchased this item with a 'rib' in (see photo's) so you could trim it down to the length you needed, however, the main suppliers these days seem to only sell it in the longer length without the rib.
Any information of where I can source the shorter version, or the version with the rib? (as shown attached).
Thanks in advance

I have read on this forum that only the long version is available. Maybe that has changed and someone will chime in.
Otherwise, people cut it while leaving a little extra and rolling it back on itself to simulate the rib.

I am in need of this part as well.
How do you roll it back, it is pretty rigid?

I replaced mine last year. My car required the long version so I didn't have to do the "roll back".
I was concerned also about getting the rubber sleeve over both pipes without breaking/ripping it. It is durable and has much more "give" in it than I thought.
When researching how to do it I read on this forum that a couple of guys did the "roll back" method for their later cars. I don't think they gave specific instructions other than what I already stated.
I used McGuire's Hot Tire Spray as a lubricant to slide the sleeve on.

It rolls back easy enough - it’s what l have done now but doesn’t look at all good. Not something l can accept.
I have one option l am trying to avoid - swap the one that is on one of my earlier cars over and hope it doesn’t break in the process.
The one you see in the photo was taken off an old set of pipes - but it was so rigid it broke apart ( not seen in photo).

What is the part # on your tube?

Thanks Naj,
I will follow this lead. I might just ask the SL Shop for the dimensions to make sure.

Let me propose some reading on this that you may find useful:

Hi Naj,
I just checked the part number of the broken one I photographed (longer version with the rib) and it is indeed 0079977782.
If Mercedes still make it with rib then it will be fine - but it seems our usual suppliers are selling a version without the rib. Not sure if they are selling after-market or if Mercedes changed suppliers?
Regards,
-
When you buy Mercedes it is the long one with rib, star logo and the part number.

I just tackeled this on my car. I cut the sleeve cleanly where needed with a very shap knife. I then trimmed the remainder within 1/2”(13mm) of the bead on the end. I then stretched the bead over a large rod (I used a socket) and trimmed right next to the edge bead with a razor blade. Then I crazy glued the edges together. I might smear a tiny bit of black urethane caulk in the groove to make it cleaner.

Nice work a round👍

I think you got brilliant result!
I just re-applied the "terminal rib" back after carefully cuting it - it is less permanent and does not look as good as yours...
-
So today I received the original part from Mercedes USA and...…..drum roll...….it has only one rib :'(
I guess I have no choice now but to slice it down to size myself and reglue it.
Who knows I probably did buy the original part in the first instance.
Case closed.

That's a bummer. I am not a huge fan of cyanoacrylate (crazy)glue. But one area it really shines is gluing rubber. I have fabricated tons of o-rings from round stock as large as 8mm and they always seem to hold.

Joe Alexander and I sourced the correct Breather Pipe Tube Sleeve a couple of years back and it was correct for my 1970 280SL.
Part number was : 007 997 7782
Fit nicely.
Best regards,

Yes, this is what I ordered December 2017 and I got the long one. Had to cut.

Same part number I ordered.
Will try "crazy" glue. I am guessing that is "superglue" in Oz?
