Title: Getting together with other local Pagoda owners.
Post by: Rolf-Dieter ✝︎ on January 29, 2019, 20:24:27
Last fall Hugh R. (jahugh), Joined our Group as a Full Member, I meet Hugh during a local car show last summer. We organized to meet him along with Dan C (Benz Dr.), during the late summer last year. Hugh lives only a little more then a  Mile away from where I live. In December last year Hugh agreed to take over my duties as Membership Director for the Americas. He is now in full swing mailing out Welcoming Packages (consisting of a Welcoming Letter from our President a Issue of our renown Pagoda World Magazine and 2 sl113.org Group Logo Windshield Stickers to New Full Members that join our Group in the Americas).

Earlier this month I thought it would be nice to introduce Hugh to Peter J. (pj), Since both have similar cars (Peter got his 230 SL around 2009 and his car is undergoing a full restoration right now and should be back on the road in May this year. Hugh got his 250 SL last year and has a lot of questions, some of them I’m sure can be resolved by getting to know Peter. So I send both an e-mail introducing the two Gentleman to one another. Peter then suggested to get together for lunch. We also invited Dan and after rescheduling our lunch once we managed to get together today at a local Dinner Restaurant. Naturally we talked about cars, past get togethers at local car shows and the planned get together that Dan is planning to hold this fall (third week in August at the Benz Barn. We also talked about getting together at upcoming events here in the London, Ontario are of Southern Ontario Canada.

Peter took a selfie of us before we departed until our next get together. Perhaps we an add a few more Pagoda owners to our group for future get together. If you read this and live within 100 KM or so of London, Ontario drop us a line, we love to meet you and your car.

Hi guys.  I'm out in Oshawa and would love to meet up sometime depending on my schedule and location.  Keep me in mind if you organize something.

Hi Steve,

Something is planned by the third week of August at the Benz Barn. Keep an eye out once details have been worked out. So far 8 members (including yourself) have expressed an interest to attend. We discussed this briefly over lunch last month.

Good evening Dieter.

I hope that I am one of the eight members already on the list planning to be there.  I'm sitting here on the South bank of the St-Laurence freezing my butt and surrounded by so much snow, I can barely get out of my driveway.  I would like to volunteer to arrive early to help in the setting up of the event if Dan decides to really do it and can tolerate another old guy who is willing to follow orders.

I will certainly keep scanning the Events in anticipation of finding Benz Barn news.

I might even manage to get to one of the local get togethers.

Hi Tom,

And then there are 10 of us, I am sure the list will be growing once Dan has worked out the details. I added your name to the list of interested participants. As you can see with Dan C. and Joe A.together representing close to 80 years of Pagoda Experiances it should be quite an event that I am sure others would like to attend. I know you also bring a whealth of Pagoda experience along. Look for Details of the planned Event Dan will post it once he worked out the Details.

Tom, I know all about the Qeubec winters, I’ve lived in Montreal, Quebec 1957 to 1979 until my job took me out West to Edmonton, ALberta at similar cold temperatures. I well remember the snow sturm in the 70’s that shut all of Montreal down for 3 days. Edmonton and further north temperatures ranged up to the -40’s one of the reasons I retired in Southwestern Ontario. :)

Best Regards,

Dieter

Yes indeed, I will be having an event at or near my place on the 3rd weekend in August. This event will be known as '' The Meeting of the Clans II '' following the first one we had back in 2006.

I've already approached the MBCNA in Toronto, MBCC ( Neil Hoffman ) and the 190SL Group ( Jim Villars ) last week and they all responded positively. Watch for more info coming soon!

I don't know Dan, a little longer and more frazzled and you'll have the Jay Leno look down pat.

I plan to be there as well.  Looking forward to it.  I guess you didn't plant winter wheat.

Dan, if you need a haircut and are anywhere near Oshawa, let me know.  That's the business I'm in.  My wife and I have eight Great Clips hair salons between Ajax and Peterborough.  If you're ever near, I'll be sure you get a complimentary cut.

I planted 85 acres but I think most of it won't make it through the winter. None of it was up before freeze up last fall so who knows?

Hi Dan,

The greatest gift my father ever gave me was, "when I was around, he stopped talking about farming with his friends".  I grew up in Southeast Missouri where he grew cotton (before the government got involved), soy beans, wheat, winter wheat, rye, vetch and in his later years, corn.  The result of his speech policy is that I knew and still know nothing about farming and finally became an engineer.  Just what he wanted!.

He's gone now but my retired (career military) brother (in New Mexico) and I still have the farm but rent it out to keep it in the family.

In August, it will be nostalgic to spend a couple of days on a working "dirt farm" across the river from where I spent 34 years in the auto industry.

John,

As I recall Dan mentioned the third weekend of August 23 and 24. However wait for his official announcement. I think the plan is to work out an agenda for the meet and what all will be done. Also the team (one team member is on a planned vacation right now) and he as well as Dan are working with a local hotel on accomudations. I am sure you can appreciate it takes a lot of planning to organize something like this.

I got a taste of it last Fall after the France Euro Event. It started with 2 of us planning to leave after the Event to visit the Pau Bracq Ateliers in Bordeaux some 800 KM from the Event location near Nice. The group ended up to be 11 cars only after it became known that Paul was in the hospital 4 cars dropped out. Arranging hotels, coffee stops and dinners was quite a shore (suffice it to say I ended up with over 200 e-mails on the subject). So you see it takes a bit of time.

Dan will issue a separate thread posting all the details during that weekend I recommend you pencil 4 days of the third weekend in August into your Calender Fri. 22 proberly pm great 23 and 24 for the event that Dan and Team are planning and Mon. 25 good bye Breakfast.

Best,

Dieter

Thanks Dieter. I understand its lot more work than us attendee's ever see. I didnt remember if he set an actual date and wanted to make sure I don't scheduled something that weekend. We have a boat on Lake Erie and August is the busiest month with friends and family. That weekend still works. My pagoda is a year a way from being done but I can still scrape up a non-MB convertible to enjoy the ride in.

i used to have a '57 300SL show up at just about every event I had but it was sold a few years ago so I no longer work on it or see it. Third weekend in August is now in place.

Dieter, you better bring your 280SL.  No imitations allowed, unless it's being restored.

Just to verify, on my 2019 calendar, the third weekend in August is Saturday/Sunday the 17th/18th.
All the other third weekends mentioned were a week later if I remember correctly.
Anxiously awaiting more details.  I'm still willing to help if I can be useful.

Here's  an idea to promote camaraderie among members, I will "seed" the idea by bringing various things to be placed on a "FREE STUFF" table.  Just one example: I had to buy a 50 foot x 3inch roll of pure zinc to plate my parcel shelf thumb screws.  I only need about a foot of it.  I'll cut and bag the rest in sizes useful for plating at home and put them on a table to give away along with plating instructions.
If anyone has extras they no longer need, you could bring it to sell, swap or give away.  If there is a reason not to do it, let me know.

Tom,

I assumed the 24 and 25 to be the third weekend in August primarily because it is the third full week. The first week as you know has only 3 days 1 to 3rd ... I stand to be corrected. I guess we have to wait for Dan’s details only he knows after all :)

Your idea to bring free stuff or items to trade is a good idea.

24th and 25th works better for me as earlier would interfere with other events I hope to be able to go to.

Dan,

When are you planning to post a new thread or are you waiting for Peter J. to return from his vacation trip to finalize the agenda for the get together and near by accommodations?

Dan, If you want it on the 24th and 25th, then that's when it should be.  I'll be there on your terms.  I'm just thankful for the opportunity to participate.

Hi guys
I'm really excited to be able to help organize this. We don't have a lot of hills around here, but I'd like to set up a nice country drive the day before Clan II events at Dan's place, and then another the day after. This gives folks who like that sort of thing the option of coming a day early, or staying a day longer, or both.

As Dieter has mentioned, my wife and I are away from the snow, but I expect to have regular access to Internet. We're in Tucson, Arizona, for a few weeks more.
