Title: 1971 280sl tach cable
Post by: Jgivoo on December 10, 2018, 04:18:49
Newbie here. The tach started making noise recently. Disconnected cable on engine. Pulled out inner cable to inspect and now I can't get it back into the tachometer. Does the tach now have to be removed inorder to insert the inner cable into the tach? I have tried rotating the inner cable but I can't get it to slip into the tach.  Any advise would be appreciated.

Hi,
No, you don't need to remove the tachometer. It's possible to do it from underneath but you need a lot of patience and rotations.

Thank you for your reply.  What do you mean by underneath?

Hi,
sorry, from the engine side. I confused it with the speedo because in German the speedo is called tachometer.

If I read this right, you disconnected the tach cable at the engine and then pulled the inner cable out from the sheath?
And now you want to push the inner back through the sheath into the tach?

You may have to unscrew the outer at the instrument from under the dashboard, slide the inner cable back in and then reconnect to both ends.

MikeSimon,
Yes. That was my biggest fear  of unscrewing outer ar tach.
Thank you
