Title: Correct Distributor for March 1963 220SE Cabrio?

Hi all,

I have read the excellent posts on checking dwell / timing / vacuum advance etc and am ready to crack on with it on my car.

My car has a Bosch distributor type 0 231 116 049 fitted which according to my workshop manual was the latest one to be used on a 220SE.

Does anybody know if this is correct for a March 1963 car? Chassis W111.023.10.038868?

According to the manual their were 3 different versions of distributor used on the 220SE, each with their own curves. I would be surprised if mine would have had the latest version, certainly this is not the case with the injection pump, intake manifold, thermo time switch, time switch, etc.

One suggestion would perhaps be, for you to instal a 123 ignition instead (electronic). Use the search function on this website for lots of info on this matter.

Well that's the second option...

I don't have to rely on my 220SE or use it very regularly so I thought I'd give the original setup a chance !!

Yes, for sure. Perhaps first look at the state of your unit. What could be examined is the centrifugal unit inside (may be siezed up) and the shaft wobble.

Hi Hans,

The distributor functions OK.

I am doing adjustment of fuel/air ratio, and as per technical manual / forum advice am making sure everything else is adjusted properly first before adjusting the mixture.

There are several different types of distributor shown in the workshop manual for a 220seb and I wanted to verify I had the correct one.

If I do find any mechanical problems (requiring rebuild) with the distributor when I check its function I may well choose to fit the 123 !!

Peter, I may be far too late in responding, but I figure what I post may be useful anyway. 

I can't make out from your picture what distributor you have, as the numbers and letters are too blurry/washed out.  However, in the picture below is a page out of the 1963 Technical Data Book.  It denotes which distributors your 220se with the M127-984 engine should have.  You're right in that two different ones were used, but neither the TDB, M-127 book, or EPC give any indication as to which distributor any particular M-127 should or should not have. There are no foot notes or anything.  I guess in this case either would be fine.

My guess would be a 49T.  I believe this was also used on the very first 230SL cars as well.  I just did one for a 220SE ( 128 ) cab that I'm working on.

I have the 49T on my '60 220SE W128 coupe if it makes any difference. I do know of an outfit that specializes in rebuilding Bosch distributors.

Also, if you want a reproduced tag for that distributor, there is a guy in Germany that makes those. I know because he made one for my 49T distributor. I'll try to find his name if you are interested.

I suspect it is the same guy who also does the data plates for cars. I have used him in the past too.
