Title: PUB2019 ?
Post by: Tomnistuff on November 16, 2018, 16:49:56
OK!  Tomorrow is my wife's birthday.  Two years and two days ago, Rolf-Dieter announced the date and location for PUB2017.  After an almost Herculean effort to attend, ((I tend to exaggerate a bit)), I still missed it.  At my age, I can't afford to do that again.

I know that PagodaFest 2019 is in the works but I live at the diagonally opposite corner of the continent, so eight days of round-trip driving is a bit much for me.  Does PagodaFest 2019 replace PUB in 2019?

The truth:  I'm not complaining.  I truly appreciate all the effort that the Board, the hosts and the PUB volunteers have put into these events over the years, although I've only been able to attend one of them.  Just thinking about going to PUB excites me and makes me want to do other things during the trip to extend and augment the joy.

I can imagine how thrilled the Left Coast members are to anticipate PagodaFest 2019.  They have been deprived for so long.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to any Pagoda event that I can realistically drive my Pagoda to in 2019, and will make every effort to be there.

There will be an email notice going out in a day or two about PagodaFest 2019. I will also be posting the information on the Events tab here on the forum.

This is a combination event, one day of tech, and one day of driving. Scheduled for 4,5 October 2019 in sunny San Diego (America's Finest City).

I'd like to go to Pagoda Fest but that's right at the start of fall harvest season for me. I still want to do the Benz Dr. tour so someday I'll put it all together. For those who can't attend something on the west side of the continent, maybe something a little closer will work. We have been talking about having an event at my place for a while and I'm thinking next August would be a good time.

Comments or suggestions welcomed.

Garry,

You have to come to little London Town, they have guests apartments in my building i’ll Be happy to provide one for you and Kate. From here you can make it a day trip to Niagara Falls and the near by Niagara on the Lake town. Nice Wineries in the area as well.

Dieter

Dan,

I will be there too just name the day.

Based on none of the above comments even mentioning PUB2019. can I assume that there is no PUB2019 being considered?

PagodaFest in 2019 is what PUB Virginia was in 2017 and PUB in 2015. So no other event is being planned in 2019.

Hi Tom,

As you may have seen earlier this year there was a survey to gauge the interest of members to hold an event in California. You have to agree that Members in the western part of North America have not been able to attend due to distance a PUB event that easily. Some came by plane without there cars.

Since Joe Alexander made a decision to no longer host the PUB events our 2017 event was held in Virginia. Please see Joe's Reply 14 below

I recommend you come to Dan Caron’s event there will be quite a number of Canadians there. And it would be a sort of mini event. In 2021 there will be I think again an Event in the Eastern part of North America, or perhaps the Board would make a survey what Membership holds about an event in central North America. One never knows.

There are also the European events Tom, I attended the one in France this year and it was great.

There are all kinds of possibilities to attend an event, in the past 5 years I’ve attended 3 and each of them was great.

Best,

Dieter

Is it worth considering using the name "PUB 2019" for Dan's event? Just so folks have a sense of continuity?

What and when is Dan Caron's event?

Some years ago he had a super "Meeting of the Clans" (MBCA, SL113, MBCC, 190SL Group, Gull Wing Group) at his farm.
Does he have something planned for 2019?

Mike,

Looks like Dan is thinking about it (see Reply 2 above). He is looking for suggestions.

Peter J.

I think PUB was a dedicated name at Joe A, place for the years he hosted PUB. As far as I know it will be continued as PagodaFest at different locations every 2 years in North America. A name like PagodaFest and Euro Event just adding the year it will take place makes sense to me.

Dan,

Are you thinking of August 2019? If so that would be great.

August is a good month for me as I'm not too busy on the farm. I don't think we can do something like what Joe does because of Canada Customs issues. Anyone with a passport should have no problem crossing the border but vendors would have a problem, if you follow me. I'm sure we could find time to look at a couple cars on my hoist.
We could do a meeting of the Clans 2.0 and follow a lot of the same format as I feel that it worked well in 2006. I'm open to ideas and have a few of my own. One idea I do have is to head down to Craig Campbell's place near Blenheim to visit his shop. For those who went to the Concourse of America and the 50th anniversary of the Pagoda and 600, you might remember the black 600 we had on display there. Craig did the body work and paint on that car which was flawless.
We are currently working on PJ's 230SL that was done there to the same standards. I think everyone would be impressed with his work.

Dan,

One idea I have would be what the German Group "Pagodetreff" has done a few times and that is what they called "NippleDay" (Translated "GreaseFittingDay"), they did it at a Mercedes Classic shop that refurbishes, restore and work on oldtimer cars.

Just an idea.

Dieter

PS. I guess you no longer like to go across the country along Route 66 if I'm not mistaking we talked about that a few years ago.

Hello, I would like to clear up the information on PUB in Blacklick.  I always enjoyed hosting the event here in Blacklick. I never decided that I never wanted to host a PUB again. As a group we decided that it would be healthier for the members to have a better variety of events and different locations, so more members could be better served. I agree with this reasoning. The event has grown much bigger and better and needed to evolve. I have grown to almost 70 years. I do not want anyone to think I had any regrets, just fond memories and friendships. Hope to see you on the West Coast in 2019!

Not at all. I still would like to go but it's not the right time of year for me. Late August to mid Sept. is the best time for me to get away. Two weeks away from here is a long time for me but I don't think it can be done in two weeks. A month would be better but I don't know if I can be away that long. I have a sister who lives in LA that I'd like to visit. She's only been living there forty  years so I suppose I should make an appearance one of these years. ::) ::)

Just in case some don't know or remember, but PUB stands for Pagoda University at Blacklick, a term that I believe was coined by Michael Salemi.

Two more of the first PUB, in August 2002 (hard to believe it's that long ago):

The name PUB, was coined by Glenn Fiscus in 2009. This was part of the "History of PUB" a short article Joe A put together and we used in the program at PUB Virginia.

Dan, Dieter, Garry, Joe and everyone.
I'm totally on board for a meeting toward the end of August 2019 no matter what we call it. I wasn't part of the group in 2006 but Dan has mentioned that event to me many times, how the Gathering of the Clans concept appealed to folks with 190SLs and other models as well.

We usually get good weather here that time of year. Dan is quite close to the USA border and there's a rather quaint ferry crossing that is very convenient. It's about an hour's drive from London, Ontario, to Dan's shop, and we sort-of form a triangle with Craig the coach builder's shop, which is on the Lake Erie shore. Plenty of opportunities for nice drives, despite the lack of mountains.

There's also this event a few weeks later www.classiccaradventures.com/ontario-events/maple-mille/mm-event-info-registration/
It was the subject of a post in another thread this year.

Oh boy....!
16 years ago...? I can hardly believe it is _that_ long ago.
Yes, a few years for sure ... but sixteeen???
Huh? :o

Yes, I remember being part of that Pagoda Group-initializing folks very well and I also do remember most of the faces on the pictures ... John Sutter for instance from ND with his 5-speed 250, who even visited me in Madison, WI with his wonderful sandy-beige 6.3 liter... Oh, those were the days.

Luckily, Tom didn't change much since then,
only he removed his beautiful European headlights from his Pagoda later again.

It was a terrific 1st PUB and I also remember and highly admit Joe's kindness, professionality, generousity, hospitality - just everything.

Thanks a lot for being alowed to participate in this wonderful Event

After reading the posts from Garry about his planned 2019 North American adventure and Rolf-Dieter about his planned U.S. Route 66 sweep to San Diego for Pagodafest, my emotions were lit up like a Christmas tree.  I even started talking to my nephew about doing the same.  Since my wife doesn't like old cars, or long driving trips, he's my go-to for co-piloting.  He also loves cars, although his is a three-year-old 526 HP Shelby Mustang 350 GT.
After a few days and a little research, I came to my senses and realized that I don't have the stamina or courage to do what Garry and Rolf-Dieter are doing.  I called my nephew back, apologized and promised to act my age in the future.
My excitement returned when the discussion turned to a possibility of a Meeting of the Clans II.  If it happens, we'll be there.  I've searched the site for previous posts about the 2006 event, and although there is not a lot of detail, what's there is really exciting.
Dan, if you decide to do it, I would love to participate and now I'll be patient, keep lurking and wait for further news.
I love this group.

Two old farts fly into France from Australia and Canada, pick up a Pagoda on the east coast and drive across to Bordeaux nearly on the west coast and back before flying home, then a shot trip across America is a Sunday drive for us old fellas who have over 155 years between us ;D 8) 8)

Achim,

Our first PUB was memorable.  I recall you came from Wisconsin or Michigan where you were in graduate school and offered tremendous technical support for those seeking solutions to various mechanical ailments.  It's well known that this group was formed at PUB in Blacklick and Cees stepped up and served us well as the first president.  Many great memories and I am certain that Pagodafest 2019 will be a great success.  I've got my ticket-thanks Jonny B and Pagodafest organizers.

It's important to note that it's hard to compare what we do now in the USA to what Joe accomplished in Blacklick each year, and I read into Joe's post that there is hope that one day we may be able to return to Joe's place for a classic PUB gathering.

So I will end my nostalgic rant now, and look forward to seeing everyone in San Diego, and hopefully for PUB, the Classic Version, in Ohio some day.

Best,

Tom

Tom, if the proposed shipment could travel west through Birmingham on Interstate 20 or 59, I would be interested in having my car collected in or near Birmingham and included in the shipment both directions.

Although I am exploring the possibility/feasibility of driving, if the east to west coast transport came to and thru/ Birmingham, AL. I would consider shipping in both directions as well. Thanks.
