Hi,
Yes, the part is available new at the dealer or classic center.
The New part # is 1272030974. Not too expensive.

This part number (1272030974) has the plug in the top for filling/venting.

I have the new part with the plug vent, got it from Tom Hansen, but I want an original without the vent

With time, effort and some JB Weld you might well restore that part to functionality. I'd start with a thin metal sleeve to maintain the inside diameter, then layer JB Weld to restore the outside diameter, then smooth to a final finish. Most, if not all, of your repair would be covered by the coolant hose and originality would be prserved.

I saw this used one on eBay.

Thanks but that's the one with the plug in it, I already have that

The hole is not drilled for the plug but it is prepped for late 280sl's.
My early 280sl is same. See pic. But as i do see the 250's don't have the pre hole form in the housing.
I didn't realize there were at least 3 versions. I'm not sure what the 230's look like.

Enclosed are 2 pic's of the housing on an early 230sl.....recently added a/c compressor.

The replacement part number is listed as 127 203 09 74 in the last engine parts book (Jan 1971) it also lists the plug and seal ring.
The thermostat cover part is listed as 127 203 05 74 in the 250/280 SL engine books, with 127 203 07 74 listed in all the 230 SL books.

Have you called this company?

This is what I have in my original 280SL (Late spring 1968 delivery). This is the smooth type lid (no "plug prep" in alloy casting)

Here is mine on my 65 230 sl. A different angle.

Beautiful Gary, post some outside pics, looks fabulous, I love my car, it has to be one of the most original 250SLs left, but I'd swap it for a restored 280SL!

These replacements with the undrilled port for the temp switch were cast this way to alleviate the need for 2 different castings. The later casting was used for the earlier housings and simply not drilled out.
