Post by: mauro12 on October 22, 2018, 21:25:24
Hello guys, I’m looking for a new firewall for my car because mine is very old and cracked. Do you know some website in Europe where to buy? I have already tried sls shop but I’m not convinced.
Thank you

On this side of the pond; you may consider to get the somewhat corresponding diamond pattern item; for instance from vendor:

Hans,
although the two products have a diamond pattern they are NOT the same.
Authentic Classics sells a pad made from material very close - if not identical - to the  "tarpaper" of the original MB firewall.
The other one is the plastic pad sold by: https://vintageeuroparts.com/index.php/mercedes-diamond-pattern-firewall-pad-w113-113-230sl-250sl-280sl-pagode-pagoda.html

Another source is   Classic-Mercedes-Parts.com
they are in Belgium, i used there fire wall pad , but its
for 65 230SL, not sure if they have 250-280SL, the fit was excellent.
very fair price and fast delivery.

Is it complicated to install? Do you have to remove all cables or not?

Mauro , No its not complicated to fit, just remove as less as possible cables,
most times just cut with sharp blade to fit over rather than  remove cable.
A small tip ,some spray can brands of contact cement are not very good,-may peel.
Over the years i have found that  applying with small brush use plenty  put on
fast, and leave it to dry at least 30 minutes before placing on. regards.

In my car I have also the VIN plate and these firewall pads that I have seen aren’t designed in that special shape.. what have you done about this problem ?

Mauro,
if your car has the VIN plate on the firewall you can cut out a rectangle with a razor blade or buy one that has the cut-out already like this one:

Thank you guys for all your answers. I have seen also sls shop selling the pad for about 57€. I wanted to ask you if the correct thickness of the pad was 5mm. Thank you

I just installed the Authentic Classics version on a friend's 250sl right before PagodaFest.  It is very nice. Installation was  easy.  Just peel and stick.  I only had to make one small cut to install around the speedo/tach/temp gauge holes.  This same cut in my original pad.

Vintage Euro Parts sells two versions of the firewall  pad.   The "concourse"  and the "plastic" version.  Big price difference.

VEP donated the "Concourse" version to PagodaFest's Silent Auction.  I just happened to have both the Authentic Classics version and VEP's Concourse version side by side. They appeared identical including diamond pattern,  tar paper material, and peel and stick backing.

Unless you are on a budget I would stay away from the "plastic" version.

I have a very low mileage unrestored 280SL that still looks new. Here's what an original firewall pad looks like. Hope this helps.

Nice indeed! We love original Pagoda cars, and pictures of them. Your car is a 1969, I suppose(?).

Seems some mechanic talked you into replacing all the original hose clamps in your engine compartment...

It's a late 69. I bought this from the original owner's estate almost 17 years ago. It had 38,00 original miles it and was absolutely pampered. It was a "Feature Car" on the early 113 website. It's hard to find original cars. Yes, I replaced all original hoses and clamps.

Ok, hope you kept the originals in a box, to go with the car...  Or you can give them to me ;)

Especially the ones for the power steering hoses are hard to come by (see attached)

They cost a fortune... and in addition to that you have to pay customs duty to have in Europe. The diamond pattern is by far more beautiful than the normal one, but it’s worth 275dollars?

What? You buy in Germany, and EU means, there is no customs into Italy...

I actually have 2 of the firewall pads that were made by the forum a number of years ago.
I am familiar with Vintage Euro pads and although not made like the original does look good and are easy to install.
The ones that I have would require more work to properly install correctly.

Have you noticed a noise reduction inside the cabin after replacing the firewall pad?

I’ve just noticed that sls shop has for sale a firewall REPRO for only 54€. Have you ever tried? Is good material?

It is certainly very non-original looking. From factory, the pad was a waffle like diamond pattern (see below, and also pictures provided in this thread by John Mancini and John in Wisconsin).

What SLS offers is a flat type surface, a bit like a piece of leather.
So, yes/no depending on what you put into the word "good". I would not put it in any car...

The W113 is a big dollar car.

Definitely put the correct waffle/diamond pattern firewall pad on there.  Not a place you want to chintz out on.

I recently installed both diamond pattern firewall paddings that are commercially available without (complete)success

The first one arrived on a roll and looked quite good. Adhesion was very good but my guy didn't do such a great job. In fairness to him the RHD ones are harder to install and the cut needed some work. I then tried the other brand which had a beautiful bitumen finish and was delivered flat but was quite difficult to install and I had some issues with delamination. (I think I got a refund - both suppliers are very reputable).
I have gone back to the previous one that came on a roll and will use another installer who claims he has had prior success. Wish me luck!

Where did you get them? I'm not asking for a "name and shame" but RHD pads are not commonly available so any source might be better than none for some folk

Guys but in general, a new pad is going to have an impact to create a noise reduction and heat inside the cabin?
Title: Re: Firewall pad
Post by: RobSirg on November 07, 2019, 11:58:16
Hi James,

The Diamond Pattern RHD Firewall pads are (were) available from 'Authentic Classics' and 'Vintage Euro Parts'. Honestly I cant remember which one was which as I purchased them a while ago.
All I remember is that in my case the one that was delivered on the cardboard roll was easier to fit (more pliable) and didn't delaminate.

As I said, the one that delaminated might have been a quality issue with that batch and was immediately refunded by the vendor.

To Maruo12's point - I don't expect it would have much impact on heat and noise transfer either but I would still select it for aesthetics. When you invest what I have in a total restoration it would be senseless to do otherwise.

On my 1969 280SL I managed to retain and restore the original firewall pad - even though the judges marked me down in a concours entry. I was never going to destroy it to get that extra point. (see below)

Regards,
