Title: Just bought this 250sl
Post by: Macaroni on October 09, 2018, 14:23:19
First of all what a great forum and big hello to all Pagodistas!

I just put a deposit on a sky blue 250SL from Gallery-Aaldering in Holland.

http://www.gallery-aaldering.com/collection/mercedes-benz-250sl-pagode-manual-gearbox-en/

There's very little history on the car but it seems in good condition and i was hoping when i collect it i can take it to an SL specialist in the UK to check over and look after, annual service, maintenance etc. Can anyone recommend a good specialist near(ish) London ... Thanks....

Welcome to our Pagoda SL Group.

I second what Ralph and James have mentioned, Colin is your man and he can help you. Colin visited me here in Canada while on vacation, he mentioned that he worked For Mercedes Benz and has been working on Pagodas for a very long time.

Wow, nice car.  Looks like it's in good shape and it's a great color combo.  The firewall mat is about as good a reproduction as I've seen.  My 230SL had the Bundt alloy wheels on it when I bought and I think they look great on any SL, even though they weren't offered until quite late.  Enjoy it!

Yes beautiful car. Congrats. The color is sublime.
In looking at the photos I see that the VIN tag is not on that beautiful fire wall, it is on the drivers A pillar.
Plus the door pockets are the soft type. Yet the speedo is in kilometers.
Would I be correct in surmising that this was an original US market model and the side markers were removed during repaint and km speedo installed ?
Any more knowledgeable opinions?

Have your rocker covers painted black or dark gray. It actually improves the look of the car which is already quite nice.

Hey Dan,

I hope you mean door sills and not the rocker cover on the engine???????

Just for clarity:
“Rocker covers” in the U.K. is “Valve covers”in the USA!
“Rocker covers” in the USA is “Sill covers” in the “U.K. !
(Or indeed in Canada)
Two countries divided by a common language!

I think the spare wheel cover should be a tighter fit than that

Here's a couple of pics of my car... note the sill covers...Mine were body coloured and having them "dunkelgrau" makes the car look more svelte. I had some handy rust meaning that they got re-done (Thanks Colin)

Nice looking car, that seems to have had a substantial amount of bodywork done to it.
At least in the front section. From what I can see both front inner fenders and fenders have been replaced. Looks like it was properly done since the hood fits nicely.

For someone who relocated to the U.S. and whose native language is not English, I should not get involved in that discussion, but.....

In the U.S., a "sill cover" is on top of the door sill, under the door. In case of our Pagoda, it would be the "rubber mat".
The metal planking on the outside is commonly called "rocker panel" by bodywork types.
A "rocker cover" in most cases is also a "valve cover", like in the U.K.

I consider a sill to be the main frame rail that runs along the outside of the car under the doors. A rocker cover is a thin shell in metal or plastic that is placed over it.
Rockers, or rocker arms, are the part that makes the valve go up and down after the cam lobe pushes on the rocker. This is all covered by a valve cover.

All the same parts with different names in different countries. What else is new?

Well in some countries, ( perhaps in the old days) valve rockers were called tappets which are activated by push rods which push the valves down. The cover for this area is called (of course) the tappet cover ;D  Probably got their name from the tapping sound they make.

Just to add confusion, some called the cam followers on pushrod engines tappets, which then made the access cover on the side of the engine the tappet cover, and the cover on the top of the engine the valve cover or rocker cover.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that is confused!

Boy am I confused also !!
Macaroni started the thread about his most probably 906 Grey-Blue 250 SL that he calls "sky blue" (of course you can call it anything you want, it is your car).
(By the way my car is the same color combo, 906, dark blue leather, and blue soft top.)
I am not confused by the discussion on sill/rocker covers vs. rocker arm covers vs. valve covers .....etc (as some of you know my favorite topic is dunkelgrau sill/rocker covers). ;D

Why is pappion talking like it is his car??? That is what I am confused about. And how does he know it was originally "bronze brown".

I was similarly confused but looking at the number of posts I concluded that pasta had been usurped by escaped prisoner.
