I thought we could do with another restoration thread!
I disassembled this car 8 years ago. The owner owns a bodyshop, took the shell away and has done an excellent job of restoring it. Now it's back and the rebuild commences.

I really like that body paint colour. Just great :) Looking forward to the thread
-
8 years...Sounds like its moving at my sort of speed...
-
Looking forward to it! Thanks in advance!
-
Great color
-
Also like the color DB 571?
-
Mine took 12. Strange seeing the right hand drive firewall. Used to seeing the throttle rod cross behind the engine.
-
Sorry for the lack of updates. We’re about 100 hours into it now...
-
More..
-
About 300 hours now. Engine runs, now to start installing the interior.
-
Some more update pictures.
We have 700 hours on this car so far........
-
And some more.
Fitting the grill correctly is surprisingly difficult and few people bother.
We give it to the chrome platers and they strip it and attend to any defects. Then they give it back so we can offer it up to the car and make any adjustments required to make it fit nice and snugly. Only once we're satisfied will they then chrome plate it.
This is actually the second grill because we spent so much time trying to make the first one fit that we practically destroyed it so we pulled a second hand one from stock and it fit like a glove first time.
The seat belts are just a nice detail touch.

Looks awesome - one lucky owner
-
It’s been a while but we’re nearly there!
Final chassis set-up in progress.
-
Just struck me that your hour count excludes the bodywork/paint
-
Yep!😱
-
I have to agree that this is the BEST color.
Of course I am biased as that is also my color, although my interior is something they call "Light Antique Yellow" leather which is a strange but striking combination. Keep those pictures coming

Apologies for my tacking another post to this thread but had a thought:
I have been "told" that DB571 is a very popular European color. (apparently no so much in US)
Can some thread readers provide some opinions? Mine was a Koln/Dusseldorf original delivered/owned car hence my inquisitiveness.

I think DB571 is a beautiful color. Mine was that color when I bought it and I got so many compliments when I drove it. Unfortunately I found out that my wife and son who will probably inherit it someday both don’t like red of any color so I had to go with another one for the restoration
Love the pics stick. Please keep them coming. I don’t feel so bad about how long mine is taking when I see your hours. Of course I’m not near the high level of your work.

I think it is a pretty stunning colour and much nicer than the regular silvers, whites and red.
-
When I bought my car in 1982, I ran into a guy (dealer) who was looking to buy one. He just despised the color of my car (Sandy Beige). he called it "Champagne/Gold metallic" and dubbed it a "juke box" paint. The favorite colors in the market back then were blue, white and silver.
-
Another reason why I didn’t go with db571 is our tech manual shows it was not available for 280sl’s. The more I look at theses pics the more I wonder “why did I care”?
-
.../...our tech manual shows it was not available for 280sl’s.../...
Really? Well, code 571 certainly was an available choice at the Dealer in the sixties.
Attached is what is presently in our Tech Manual

my 71 is 571!

I'm not a huge fan of whitewall tyres but this is one of the colours that rock them beautifully

What's the MB part number for the feeler gauge you used for checking the sump/subframe gap? ;)
Which mounts have gone? Engine or subframe (which I assume is weight bearing on the ramp)
-
Only engine mounts are relevant for this gap since the engine sits on the sub frame.
Failed sub frame mounts will be seen when car is elevated like this as the sub frame hangs from the sub frame mounts and this tests them to their limit.
You will see them either completely separated or showing lots of deep cracks.
I checked my records and they're two weeks inside warranty!

Are they Michelin Whitewalls? Are they still available?

Are they Michelin Whitewalls? Are they still available?
Yes, by special order and lots of money.....
-
Interesting.
Can you please tell me the size - 185? 195? What ratio - 70? 75?
What are we talking about per tyre (if you don't mind my asking?)
Regards,
-
the correct tyre size; 185/14
I could check but from memory over £200 each plus VAT.
-
Thanks Stick👍
-
It COULD be argued that's not bad as Longstone are selling the MXV-P (with the rub strip) at £214 (inc VAT)
-
There's always the Coker Company Firestone Phoenix tire which has a similar look to the originals ~$296/tire for whitewalls

-
I always thought that 185 is a bit small but maybe the original tires had a different aspect ratio than today. For regular tires, I think 195 works better.
-
It seems I was remiss in posting the final pictures!

Beautiful work Stick!
