Title: Hub Cab / Wheel Cover Stencil for use in North and South America
Post by: Iconic on December 26, 2017, 19:30:45
The clubs stencil for the Americas is on its way to me and I should have it Friday of this week.
I looked through several strings to find out who else in the Americas wants it and I came up with this list (with request date).
StevenF - 4/15/16
Beachbear - 7/4/16
x046866x - 9/27/17
johnk - 10/30/17
scoot - 12/1/17

I can send it to anyone that needs it quickly and is ready for it, but then I would request it is sent right back to me as I will probably be ready by then.
I'm going to follow this list (requests were made in several different posts, so it is hard to follow), unless anyone has corrections for me.
I made this new string for Stencils for the Americas only to try to make this process more straightforward.
I'll be putting a link to this string in the other strings on the same subject.

Hi Mark,
Could you add me to the list?
Thanks,
Meyer
Sure, I won't be maintaining the list, but I've cleaned it up and have made it current.
So, this is the list as best as I could figure out from looking at the string on the subject and "talking" to members.
1. johnk (John) - in transit to John.
2. scoot (Scott) - 12/1/17
3. mnahon (Meyer) - 4/22/18

I will appreciate being added to the list of full member recipients of a soft stencil for the 230-250 style hubcap stencil.  It’s not clear to me who retains the list or how to get added.  A little help from my friends will be appreciated.

Tom,
Just read this string from the beginning.
I'll bet you can figure it out.
Good luck,
Mark

Received my new hub caps from the Classic center last week. Beautiful.

my bad....  I have the stencils and if you're up this way (Mooresville) you can pick them up or I can ship them.  Sorry to have missed this but the holidays and some emergency travel have kept me off the boards.

RJ,

Thanks for your response. Would it be possible for you to ship it. I won't be up that way is the near future. You can ship after the Holiday as I won't need it that soon. PM me and I'll send my address.

Thanks

Tony

Arct1k,
If you read a few posts before this one, you will see that Chris (revrevrev) might have the stencil.
For quicker response, I suggest you PM (personal message) Chris to see the status.
If you PM him, he will get an email right away. Otherwise, it might be a while until he looks at this string.
Good luck ! It works great.

Are people using the stencil having good results? When I had my caps painted my painter said having just 1 stencil and painting 4 or 5 hubcaps created more problems than it was worth. He said it had to do with the paint being used on my car. If I recall, since I was doing a base coat / clear coat it did not work as well than if he had used a single stage paint.

My overall take is that the 2 piece stencil set was more work than reward.  I have to redo 1 of my wheels and do a spare.  I will use the center stencil and tape the outer rim.  I found that it was difficult to get paint into the corners since the outer piece is so thick.  Cleaning it is also a PITA so do all 4 at once..  I'll post results on the next 2.

Concerning possible problems with 2 stage paints - have your paint store blend a single stage can for you..  I think that will make it easier and eliminate the second coat.  You can also use it to fill chips..

I used the thick green flexible two piece set up. Had no problem at all with the outer ring but getting the paint in the corners on the Star was a real challenge because the stencil is real thick. My little trim gun worked best for that. Two stage certainly was more work.  I would think the best set up is To use the thick Outer flexible ring and the thin plastic cover for the Star.

I discussed using the stencils with my painter and we decided that taping would be a cleaner edge. The stencils would not rest on the hubcaps consistently without allowing paint and overspray under the stencil. I taped the hubcaps and my painter did the rest. Results were very good.

Hey Frank (doitwright),
You asked the question, so I will throw my 2 cents in.
The taped approach yields a very clean look, cleaner than factory, if done properly.
Therefore I went with the two silicone rubber type stencils to give a more factory finish with some fuzzy edges.
I really took my time and cleaned the stencils between coats. I did not want to put down the stencil on a hubcap if it had paint on it.
I used single stage paint in a rattle can from paintscratch.com (I'm not affiliated with them in any way).
The match in color was perfect or near perfect and considering the hub cap is separated from any painted surface with a huge black circle (the tire) you cannot see any difference in finish.
After completing the caps, it looked like I needed to do two of them over again, ..... but once they are on the car you really don't see any imperfections. You know how people talk about cars as being a "10 footer"? Well my hubcaps are a 3 footer.  ;D
Take care,
Mark

From this string it appears that revrevrev was the last to have the stencils.
Please PM revrevrev if you want to use it.

I am looking to either borrow the stencil or buy from someone that does not need it any more.
Thank you

Hi Dirk,
I assume you need the masks for your 230SL hub caps, correct?
I am not sure whether the group ever had those (Type 3). Looks like only the 280SL masks (Type 4).
See my reply #78 here: https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=21501.msg169059#msg169059

Thank you Alfred,
yes, you are right, the type 3 is what I need. Just saw that Vintage sells them. I am still debating if I should try the template or "just" tape them?
Hubcaps will come back from the chrome plating shortly.
Thanks
Dirk

Taping them is a study in patience. I have done a couple of sets and it takes about 30 minutes to tape one cap.

These result in a very sharp line, so a taste preference sort of thing. Factory caps will have a more softened edge line.

Also, if you tape them, remember to take the tape off BEFORE the paint fully sets/hardens. If you wait the edges can crack.
