Title: Wind Deflector with 3rd seat
Post by: Simax on October 11, 2017, 14:30:24
Hello,

does anybody know if there is a wind deflector which fits with original 3rd seat at Pagoda?

I have the MB one and a kinder seat and it fits a treat. It clamps on the front lip of the soft-top well lid
Not cheap though. There are other options discussed in this thread: https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=18643.0

It's not on the car at the moment. Here are a couple with it down. The hinge is on the front edge and when it's up, there's mesh behind your headrests and mesh covering the rear seat area.

Yes - and my kinder seat is behind the drivers seat (you can just see the top of it in the second picture)
It's a mercedes benz item but I cannot remember where I got it. Chances are, through a main dealer. I recall thinking how expensive it was so take a deep breath!

Thank You James. It seems that this original Wing Deflector is no longer available.  Im still searching if any producer of "new" Wind Deflectors for W113 has version for 3seat Pagoda.

I also  have a wind deflector and the third seat.  Mine sits on the inside lip of the soft top hatch.  I will post a photo next week as I am away from the car at the moment. It is slightly different to James’s.

I purchased it about 15 years ago, from either Buds Benz or SLS.  Not certain time has erased some memory but I think it was Buds.  Here are a couple of photos of it fitted to the car, but how it is fitted I cannot photograph until Monday night when I get home.

Contact this company and ask whether theirs will work in cars with 3rd seat:

The wind deflector with kinda seat fitted.  You will note that two of the hooks that hang the deflector have been removed, only because they rattled  It just sits on the edge of the soft top hatch and the seat belt fitting just fine...

Try Millers as well to see if they have this one.

I question whether there isn't too much emphasis on the wind deflector fitting with the kinder seat, rather than the idea of modifying the kinderseat back to accommodate the wind deflector.  I have a windschot by chrom design and the original kinderseat back is too tall for it.  I think I'm going to un-staple the upper edge of the upholstered back, chop about an inch off the seat back, then restaple the upholstery.  Mine currently stands a little taller than Garry's, I think.  I'll measure it relative to the back wall tomorrow.  If it's visibly different than Garry's, I'll photograph and post it.

I'm almost sure I've noticed different kinderseat back heights among the photos on the web.

Well, I was right and I was wrong.  I was right in that the Windschot by Chrom Design does not fit with the kinder seat.  The second photo below shows that the top of the kinderseat back holds it off by about 1 1/2 inches.  The other side fits fine.

I was wrong in that I thought the seat backs I had seen were different heights.  They are not.  They appear to all be the same.

By comparing my Windschot with Garry's (Windschot, I think) his may have a shorter vertical section in the brackets that sit on the soft top compartment wall, but I can't really tell.

Looking at the photos in JamesL's post (third reply) with the two ladies in the car, The screen sits on top of and almost completely covers the leather or vinyl horseshoe.  The Windschot by Chrom Design sits inside the rear seat area and contours to the inside of the back wall, therefore, it sits much lower and therefore interferes with the kinder seat back.

I can see two possible solutions for my Windschot by Chrom Design:
  1) Make four new soft top compartment front wall Windschot brackets to "lower" the hooks to allow the Windschot to sit level and with the passenger end sitting on the wall but only slightly higher than where it is in the second photo, very near the top of the Kinder seat back.  The new brackets would raise the passenger side slightly to protect the top of the kinder seat back and raise the driver's side to level the Windschot and at the same time, give the horseshoe something to sit on and retain in all four places, or
  2) Leave the Windschot as it is and modify the height of the Kinder seat back, i.e: reshape the top edge of the wood and padding and then re-staple the upholstery.  Unfortunately, this would violate Jim Villers' law of "Do No Harm".

I think I'll just make and paint four new brackets to optimize the position of the Windschot relative to the horseshoe and the Kinder seat back.

I'll post the design and photos of what I make when the project is finished.  (It's too late in the year now anyway to worry about getting any significant use out of the car on the road before it's time to un-license it for the winter.

Oh! By the way, please pardon the dust in the two photos, and don't hesitate to criticize my comments and decision.

Tom,

My brackets were always a PIA.  You can see from my photo that I have had to adjust the brackets , bending them slightly to allow it to sit well enough to the point that the front brackets hook has been removed.  It sits down hard on the seat pushing it slightly when the soft top hatch is closed.  In my case, my seat belt bracket holds up the front of the screen.

I think it would be easier and better to adust the screen rather than modify the seat back to a non standard shape.

So, SLS replied that they dont offer wind deflector which fits 3seat version. They had original MB and it fits but now is sold out. So it seems that only original MB wind deflector fits ....

For Me is not solution to modify 3rd seat. I will try to ask someone to modify My wind deflector.

Then there is always this solution that one of our UK Members has on his car.  Not sure how it fits or will fit with Kinda Seat but it is certainly the most elegant solution to the wind stop that I have seen.  I think the member is Kamal in London.

I think I have pretty much exhausted all of the options for my Windschot installation.

I could not bring myself to modify the Kinderseat back to lower the Windschot, and the total side-to-side length of the Windschot, including the small welded on tabs that hold the support hooks is too great to allow the horseshoe to close easily if brackets are modified to mount the Windschot anywhere above the top of the installed seat back.  I made some curved standoff brackets to accomplish that, but I didn't like it, it was ugly and it was a pita to install?  The only "clean" way that I can see to mount the Windschot is to remove the seat and seat back, put them in the trunk, install my new parcel shelves and mount the Windschot the way it was designed to be mounted.  Once the parcel shelves are installed, I can store the seat and seat back there to leave room in the trunk for the luggage.
