Title: Retrofitting Air-conditioning
Post by: dirkbalter on September 01, 2017, 16:57:17
All,
I want to install an aftermarket air conditioner and I am looking at the unit sold by Buds Benz. To me, it looks similar to the original ones and has up to date technology as far as I understand.
I was looking around but didn’t see alternatives. Are there other vendors or systems that you are aware of and can recommend? Did anybody install the above system and can comment?
My car is completely disassembled with the body ready for paint. I would like to make the necessary changes prior to paint. I red the MB installation instructions for the original air retrofits that were done by the dealers.
I recall reading concerns (but didn’t find the thread) about air conditioners being retrofitted to 230sl. I believe it had to do with the crankshaft not as strong or thick. Not sure exactly what. Is that still a concern and what exactly seems to be the problem? And does that also apply to the newer compressors as well?  I have seen multiple 230’s as well as sedans with ac, one of them being my neighbors. His was installed 20some years ago and he loves it.
Any suggestions or insight is appreciated.

Research doing away with the original "monster AC bracket" and use a small compact sedan bracket of the era. With the sedan bracket the alternator goes back to the original position below and the rotary compressor mounts above. Three bolts and less than an hour of time removes the sedan bracket as opposed to three days on the "monster bracket" removal. Some other parts required for the conversion.

Was looking for a nice slimline under dash evaporator , then stumbled over this;

Yes, interesting, looks like they are using the compact sedan style bracket and one belt. With this system your alternator stays in the original position (below).
