Title: Data Colour Cards
Post by: ohoraherecaptain on December 03, 2016, 22:35:42
Hi Guys.
Just enjoyed going through this site's 'Data Cards' on paint colour options. I have a 280SL that I want to the Cream/Burgundy combo.
The problem I have is the 542G - Dark Red for the 1965-71 [24] looks good on the car but very dull [and quite different] on the sample.
On the other hand the 573G - Burgundy Red which was available for the 63/65 [70] looks more like what I'm after. I'm finding this difficult as I definitely plan to go Cream with the HT [see attached pic. anyone know this car?], so if any of you have any advice on this I would welcome it?
JOH.

I love the two tone colours of our Pagoda, any two tone is good. Before making a decision it could pay to see the colour in the flesh so to speak.

A word of advice, the colours that you see on your screen from the “Data Card” area will be representative of how you have your colours set up on your computer so can look very different from the real thing.

I learnt this lesson when ordering some touchup paint many years ago!!!!!!

Hi There,

I'm also a self confessed fan of two-tone cars. Although that sample car you showed should have the hubcaps matched to the roof - which looks better IMHO.

I'm also restoring a car in 542G colour ("Dark Red"). One thing I noticed about some/many colours is how different they look in different light, on horizontal surfaces or vertical surfaces, etc, etc.
I find the 542G does look Brown at times and Burgundy other times. My guy doing the painting had different people mix up samples (for comparison) and he thought each sample looked different, but I was not so convinced as some samples he showed me were wet, others were dry, and they were on different substrates. It's not a very complicated colour as it is only made up of 3 tints. He eventually used the paint as it came out of his tinting machine and to me it looks fine - sometimes Burgundy and sometimes Brown. As long as he paints the entire car with the same paint tinting machine I am happy.

I've attached 2 photos of the dash that was recently painted - one using the flash, and one without.

Hope this helps in some way.

Cheers

Rob

Hey Joh(n),

Fully support what Rob is saying.

These dark red colors are changing almost like a chameleon depending on the amount of light they are exposed to, especially out in the sun.
542 (G) is the succeeding color of 573 (G) and both look (to me) stunningly good, especially if they go with cream or cognac or so. The actual differences between both reds are little but noticeable.
If I were you (yes, I know, I am not) I would always only go with a period correct color code, not with "what I am just liking today". And that can be only 542 G in your case.
Go and look out for cars in the real that are painted 542; they're all beautiful.

If you don't want that - looking at too many cars out in the real (i.e. too lazy) -
you can watch as many 542-colored cars on pics as possible,
for instance here:

http://www.classicway.de/w111-und-w112-coupe-und-cabriolet_111/farbcode_542/Mercedes_542-dunkelrot-dark-red.htm

Enclosed a pic from two sibblings, a '64 in 573 (left on the picture) and a '63 in 542 (right) (although a '63 should also go with 573 only).
Enjoy!

Best,

Achim
