Title: 2017 PUB Virginia
Post by: Raymond on November 14, 2016, 22:50:46
Let's plan to go to the PUB.  The Board of Directors is proud to announce the American Event for 2017: PUB Virginia!
Building on the success of the biennial technical session started at Joe Alexander's home a decade ago, the Pagoda University Blacklick will retain its heritage but move its location.  Tom Sargeant will host the event at his beautiful Ramsay Farm outside Charlottesville, Virginia.  In addition to the much beloved tech sessions with Joe, Gernold Nissius, Jim Villers, and others, we will add a touch of the Euro events with scenic drives and winery tours (and tastings).

Your Board Secretary, Charles Taylor (of 2013 Williamsburg fame) will be Co-chairing the event with Tom.  More information will be coming over the next months.  For now, save the dates, September 15 to 17, 2017 for the best PUB in the Americas.

If you live in the region, or can help in any way, please PM Chuck to volunteer.

Wife has a big birthday next Sept (13th) and we have a big anniversary on the 20th. She has to be in Houston on 13th/14th, I'd like to be at Goodwood on the 11th and am planning a party for her on the 23rd. Can I get to Virginia for this? Can I get my car to Virginia for this?
Exciting.

James, if you, your wife, and car show up in that schedule, You'll be in contention for the "Most Mountains Moved to Get Here" award.

James, there be quite a few single drivers I'm sure that can offer you a passenger seat in there Pagoda. So if you schedule things right you can attend everything ... it will be s busy time for you however such fun :)

As for a passenger seat, just name the airport you fly into and I'll put your name on my passenger seat, so leave your car at home and just bring some pictures or a slide show on your device :)

Dieter

PS. Ray, shall we start a thread to compile a list of attendees, or will we use this thread?

Chuck and I are pleased to be co-chairing PUB 2017-Virginia.  We are looking for Group members that would like to assist in the organization and planning of the event and we've already had a couple of volunteers come forward.  If you are interested in helping, please send a PM to Chuck Taylor or Tom Sargeant.  Thanks and we look forward to a great US event for the Group in 2017!

I think PUB 2017 will be a wonderful trip and another educational weekend, just as was the trip to and the weekend in Blacklick in 2015 (the only one I've attended so far).

Coincidentally, according to google maps, the drive time from Quebec City, Quebec, Canada to Greenwood, Virginia is 7 minutes longer than the 2015 trip to Blacklick, Ohio.

Being originally from farm country in Missouri, I love long drives through rural America, especially in the autumn with the changing colors.

I've still got some work to do to be ready, but at least my garage renovation is 95+ % complete and I can wrap up my 230SL restoration this winter and shake down the car all summer long before PUB 2017.

I'm really looking forward to following this planning thread from day 1 to PUB.

I've been lucky so far and I hope my health holds out so that I can drive to participate in all the activiities of PUB weekend in another beautiful venue.  I'm planting seeds of temptation to convince my wife, an anti-old car technophobe, to want to come with me.  If not, I'll have to convince my nephew to come with me again.

In 2015, the Eastern Canada to PUB Convoy didn't work out, but maybe we'll have a chance for an even bigger one in 2017.

I am planning on being there.  I will not have my car ready by September but I do plan to have the basic chassis on the rotisserie out of my basement for media blasting and initial paint..

I hope that my wife Linda will be up to coming, she has had several health challenges this year but is doing very well right now.  I have promised Bob Youngman that I will be there.

Looking forward to the PUB.

As long as you mentioned Bob Youngman (BaronYoungman), I will mention that we have started talking about driving there together again. Maybe Ron and Urban will join and we will have the same caravan we had at PUB2015. There is a possibility that my wife might join in on the fun too.
I've got a lot of work to do to make my car ready for the drive (the newer blue one).
Thank you Chuck and Tom for co-chairing the event !!

Its a long drive to Viginia from Mexico City, so my Pagoda will stay home. My wife and I will simply fly to a convenient airport, rent a Mercedes and drive it to the PUB location. I will be happy to share my Pagoda´s maintenence succes stories and eager to hear similar stories from other members. Date marked!

Wow!  I just checked the average high and low temperatures for Charlottesville in September.  Daytime highs about 80 degrees and nighttime lows about 60 degrees.  PUB2017-Virginia is looking more-and-more like a soft-top-down, stereo-volume-up, cruise-control-on, 2,900 km round trip dream cruise.

Chuck and Tom, and everyone who helps you, thanks for making for a wonderful September 2017.

We are in!  Wife will drive the SUV with the kids and spares/tools (although we needed none last time).  Mark are you planning the route?  Lou is in also with his, I suspect, highest mileage 230sl (280 engine now) black Pagoda with 3rd engine and approx 250K miles.  Maybe you can convince Jim to bring a 3.5 coupe?
Bob

Howard has to be there for we had Chicago style hot dogs together when he made that promise so that almost makes it a blood oath.

Mark are you planning the route?
No problem, we have plenty of time. We will do it together. Approximately 750 miles each way for us.
My better half might elect to ride in the SUV for part of the ride.
I'll let you work on Jim.

Mark/Uban,

I am trying to work out what is the easiest way to get to Toms in Virginia from Melbourne Australia and Chicago is a good option for Frequent Flyer using Qantas as it is a hub.  Do either of you or any others going through chicago have a spare seat to and from Toms to there.  If so I think I could/can get myself to Chicago and back to Oz and can work my flights around my driver.

I'm also considering joining, again :D. If so, I will fly in to Washington/IAD on either Thursday or Friday PM and returning on Monday PM. Transfer to/from Charlottesville is open (t.b.d.) for me. Maybe some more friends from Europe will come along as well?

Garry,
I would be glad to share the drive with you from Chicago, but, at this point my wife is planning on attending, and after all, she is a lot prettier than you.  ;D
If anything changes on my end, you will be the first person I contact.
Of course, it will be great getting together again at PUB or in Chicago.

Hi James,

Tom and Chuck will in the near future issue a Registration thread amongst other details like activities planned during the event. Just keep an eye out for it whenever you come to the site under "unread posts since last visit"

Meanwhile read Tom's post under Reply #2

Here At this Link ---->  http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=25456.0

Note however, I believe you need to be a Full Member in order to attend PUB (can one of the other Board Members confirm that this is so?). Or can James attend as a guest if he travels with another Full Member?

Enrique,

Please refer to the link I posted to James above. I am sure the Tom's Farm Address will be part of the information that will be posted in the near future. Meanwhile you can use Charlottesville, VA as your destinations the Farm as I understand is only 11 miles from Charlottesville.

Best,

Dieter

Hello All
I am a fairly new member and am very interested in attending. Would fly in (open to suggestions on where/how id best) as my car is not running but the thought of driving across the country from California with no AC doesn't sound too appealing even if it was. I have spent a lot of time on this forum the last couple of months soaking up all the knowledge and working on my restoration. Can't wait to learn more.
Is there any type of inquiry as to what topics are of the most interest for the event?

Closest large airport is Washington DC.

At the same time I'm trying to complete the assembly of my car for the trip to PUB, I've decided to eliminate left over stuff and get rid of stuff I'll hopefully never use again.  Consequently, I'm putting stuff in a box to bring to PUB to give away.

So far, there are:

o  part of a fresh air vent grill with several still useful vanes and the circular rotating vane holder and spring,  I bought a used assembly from one of the members here and used one or two of the vanes to repair my original one.  This is what's left.

o  four 6006 2RS radial bearings for a 230SL (at least) driveshaft intermediate (center) bearing.  I had to buy five from a wholesaler and only used one.

o  the tool that I made and used to remove and install the torsion rods for the soft top cover and trunk hinges.  You can see the tool, along with the procedure I wrote up in the technical manual, in the trunk section.  Maybe it could be treated like the hubcap paint stencil and shared with whoever needs it.  At any rate, I hope never to need it again.

At my age, once the car is finished, I never plan to work on it again.  I'm going to drive it and pay others to repair it, so I'm going to dispose of everything except the most basic tools.  I don't have much yet, but I've only just started today.

Between now and PUB, I expect to find a few other Pagoda parts and home made restoration tools to give away at PUB.

If anyone else finds Pagoda stuff to get rid of that isn't worth the effort of selling or the cost of shipping, but too valuable to scrap, maybe you can bring it along and we can set up a table of "FREEBIES" at PUB.

Tom Kizer

I took a look at the Eventbrite site for the PUB Virginia event and clicked on the green "Tickets" button.   One of the possible selections is "Day Pass-Sunday Only" at $25.00 plus a fee of $2.37.  When I looked there were 25 such tickets remaining.  I didn't find an explanation for this item.  Can someone from the organizing committee advise what this ticket covers.
Thanks

Ralph,

The Sunday Daypass is a way to allow locals access to come out and look at the cars. Each ticket type will come with a bracelet that allows admission for the designated portion of the event. If someone purchases a Sunday Daypass, they would only be admitted on Sunday.  The location is such that we can actually scan tickets as people enter (or we can scan the ticket on your smart phone like an airline). If someone buys a General Admission ticket, that ticket is good for Friday through Sunday afternoon and includes meals.  Once you enter the first time and your ticket is scanned, we will give you a bracelet that allow re-entry each day. Hope this helps.

Best,

Tom

Hi guys.

Well the drive from Winnipeg to the PUB is 29 hours without stopping according to Google.  I just bought my tickets so I am going, but how to get there is the question. Do I fly there which takes 7 hours, or drive to Chicago and join a caravan! At this point I don't know. What I do know is that on Sept, 13th, I turn 55 years old, so I will be spending my Birthday with some of you, if I decide to drive, which makes me happy.(don't tell my wife that)..

Tickets for me and my wife have been purchased.
Has there been any discussion on bring pets, dogs???
Will dogs be welcome for the whole event and meals in the barn? Cocktail party?
I assume dogs won't be welcome at the Saturday night dinner.
Of course I am talking about properly supervised dogs with no "gifts" left behind.  ;D

Hey Ron.K,
I would not have guessed you were 54/55.
My guess would have been low to mid 40's !!
Looking forward to seeing you .... and your car.

Can someone who knows, answer waltklatt's question about pop in attendance??? Others might want to know the answer too.
Thanks,

I won't be there but don't begrudge the charges.  These events take time, effort and expense to coordinate and host volunteers are usually few and far between.  "Club" attendees should be happy to contribute to the club even if just dropping in.  In the 190 SL Group, we don't slice and dice it like this, you pay the full fare and go for the ride or pay the full fare and do less than the full ride if you want.  But, either way, you pay the fare.  And, if you don't show, you don't get your money back.  Even if you're not there, commitments have been made and club money laid out.

I just returned from the Deutsche Marque concours in Vienna VA.  As one who was away from the Pagoda Group and the MBCA for about 13 years, I was really disappointed that I would not be able to purchase tickets to attend the PUB in Charlottesville VA because it is sold out.  I hope it is a great success and maybe the creative people in the Pagoda group will come up with more of theses activities in the future to accommodate more owners/members. I will try to pay more active attention to announcements of upcoming events.
