Title: Thumbs-up, Thumbs-down
Post by: Peter van Es on July 25, 2016, 19:37:16
I've activated a Karma feature on this forum. I have never done this till now, as I did not want any negativity to be encouraged. With Twitter and Facebook being so well known, you can now "thumbs-up" a great post, or thank someone who helped you. If a post is not useful or off-topic, you can post a "thumbs-down".

A members overall standing is shown has his or her "karma".

If his feature gets misused, I'll deactivate it again...

To the left of the post, under the user's details...

Under the user's details I see Posts" and a number, below that "Karma:" and a number, and below that two icons, one is for "View Profile" and the other is for "Personal Message."

On my ipad, the [thumbs up] [thumbs down] buttons are just above the two buttons for view profile and Private message

Nice touch Peter!

On my iPad Pro I see

Total likes:

And the number 0, 1 or more etc.

I also see the Like Box in red and numbers of likes

Dieter

Edit after change was noted

Let me guess... you are looking at your own profile... there will not be any buttons there!

Hi All,

I've added a different kind of button, see the image. It is a "like" button, and each post can be thanked (or liked):

You can see "liking statistics" here:

I'll probably disable the karma feature... as you can be negative with that. Here you can just "like".

After all, we all "like" one another, right?

I will probably get a "thumbs down" for this remark, but that is OK.  I believe that allowing negative ratings on this forum will hurt the positive, welcoming, and friendly spirit that has been the tenor of this forum from day one.  I would suggest reconsidering this feature.

I would have to agree.  Just more "noise" and really adds nothing to an already excellent forum.

Must assume "karma" has been disabled as I can't find it.  Sounds like a poor idea in any event so I'm not sorry to see it go even though I never knew it was there.

As I've indicated in my earlier post:

You might have missed that in my previous post because of the embedded pictures...

How about naming the like button "Kudos". It can mean like, praise, and thankyou at the same time. Just a suggs.

Peter,
to be honest I find this blood red "Like" button somewhat irritating; reminds me of a headmaster waiting with a stick to make sure I answer.
My preference is to not use any of these features created by Facebook, Twitter, and other so called social media to reward "eyeballs" with meaningless symbols of worthiness to keep them happy and come back to create more lucrative traffic.

If we really need such a feature then why not use the old fashioned thumbs up symbol that is already available as a message icon?

Peter,
Why did you feel it was necessary to sully our forum with this crap addition, I feel sure that the majority of our members do not want it.
Leave this brain dead toilet material to the facedook, titter and such like sites, we do not want it.
It may have been a good idea to ask the members before introducing such rubbish

We all know that you do the best for all of us on this forum and we know the spirit of your intentions.   If this were a Vote, I would agree with those that are not for this thumbs up nor LIKE.   What has been built here by you and other founders is different and thats one of reasons we frequent it and respect it.  I would vote to not have this added feature.

Respectfully,

The other forum I frequent is 500eboard.com and they have a "Thanks for the useful post feature" (or just thanks) that works well.
Perhaps that would be useful here.

I would like to quote Steve Jobs (https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Steve_Jobs) on this: A lot of times, people don't know what they want until you show it to them. So I showed you. You didn't like it. I removed it. Don't bite my head off!

I like the idea of a thanks button but other than that am happy to have things just as they've always been.
However, were there a dislike button I would certainly use it on any unnecessarily discourteous vitriol that I might stumble across...
