On the 230 and 250, if the interior was leather, then the console insert was also matching leather.

Tyler, I am not sure that the tray insert in 230SLs always matched the interior material, that is, leather or MB-tex.
From what I have seen and the many discussions here the liner was some sort of vinyl (different surface texture than MB-tex) with a very thin foam backing even in cars with leather interior.
The change over to carpet material started with 280SL VIN 012089.

Alfred, my 280SL, VIN 007749, was delivered at Sindelfingen with carpet in the tray.

This is true for the two 250SL I owned; there was this thin, black vinyl insert, shaped to fit the wooden center tray. The edge of this vinyl piece was heat embossed. Pic will follow.

Sorry to stir the pot on an old topic. Anyone have a link to a previous discussion. My insert is leather and no doubt original. (I knew the previous owner well- my Father) It still has remnants of foam backing and appears to be die cut to the shape of the tray.- the rear corners are rounded to match the contour. The grain and black color is identical to the other leather in the car with body numbers stamped on them.
Possible they ran out of vinyl and used leather remnants? Like the canvas top remnants they used for tool pouches?

you can relax, your leather insert is correct! I should not have doubted you! ;)
1. The Edition B of the spare parts list for the 230SL (#10 097) shows a part number for the "plastic" tray cover: 113 840 01 75
and a separate p/n for the "leather" tray cover: 113 840 02 75.

Alfred, The topic in your link above is locked so I cannot add photos there. I'll add them here.
Original console leather insert. You can just make out the remnants of the foam and glue used. What is left has turned gummy. Was very thin. The rear edges area is contoured to the console curved corners.

that is very interesting because it is rare that one can find discrepancies with Engelen's account. I wonder what caused it.
We'll have to add a note in the Technical Manual.

Hello Alfred, I owe you and the forum an apology for the error in my Reply #2 of May 3 above. I have been looking at the carpet insert in the tray for over 45 years and I believed that it was as delivered. After seeing Engelen’s table I went to my old files to see if I could confirm the correctness of my statement.
In 1970 when I shipped my car from London to New Orleans, a number of items were stolen in transit including the Grand Prix radio, the Automatic antenna, the tool kit and the levers for roof attachment. My brother-in-law cleared the car, advised me of the losses and indicated that these missing items were obvious but perhaps other items were missing which were not so obvious. I wrote him a letter from London advising him in great detail of all items that might be easily removed from the car. One of the items listed was the wooden tray “with a leather bottom matching the leather upholstery in the car but not glued down.” It turned out the tray and insert were also missing.
A claim was filed with MBNA’s insurance provider Albingia and reimbursement was received for the missing items. When the local MB dealer replaced the missing items in late 1970, the carpet insert matching the carpet in the car was provided instead of the original leather insert.

what a bummer! Unfortunately, it was quite common that cars in route across the Atlantic were stripped of loose but valuable parts.
Our new VW Westfalia Camper arrived in September 1970 also stripped like yours.
Are you planning now to fabricate a leather insert for the tray?

Hi Alfred, my original leather interior is due for an upgrade. Hopefully I will get started on it later this year when I am back from Italy. I will now have one additional piece to buy!

Can I clarify the leather insert. Is it correct that if there was a leather interior, then the tray insert was of the same material and colour in the 230SL?
I presently have a carpet insert that is clearly wrong but have some leather left from the recovering of my seats that I could use.

the spare parts list shows that when you ordered a leather cover p/n 113 840 02 75 you had to specify the color.
I assume that means the same color as the seats (this p/n is in Group 91 together with the seats).
