Title: Steering Wheel Repair in UK?
Post by: Alex D on December 23, 2015, 23:29:31
Hi,

Have any of our UK friends ever had any work done or heard of http://www.steeringwheelrestoration.co.uk/ ?  My steering wheel has a few minor cracks, and shows some typical wear.  I was wondering about repair/refurbish instead of $1550 for a new one.

Thanks,
Alex

I had mine done there and I wasn't impressed. I was told a 2 week turnaround, although that wasn't a priority for me, was more like 2 months, no communication from them during the entire process. Was told it would look factory fresh, when it came back to me it had a black mark right in the top. I called to tell him I wanted to send it back and the guy clearly had the hump about it. I sent it back, again no communication at all. I had to call to make sure they received it.

It arrived back around a month later with the mark gone. The two machined ridges round the wheel had all but disappeared and is more like one slightly raised ridge now and are very undefined.

I wound up buying a new one from Authentic Classics. So I wouldn't use them again, in fact one of my Corvette buddies was going to send a Triumph wheel to them and I advised against it, I'll never use them again.

That being said if it is a driver quality car and you just want a wheel that isn't cracked they would be fine, if you want it perfect then pay up and get the real deal. I've just looked it up and the restoration cost me £330 plus 3 lots of shipping and VAT, so £450 all in. I must admit I thought it was more than that, the replacement wheel was I think $1100 so more than double the cost, you get what you pay for I guess.

I will sell my wheel but not until the car is finished and I know the new one fits properly and the horn works etc etc so probably in about a year

I had minor cracks etc. on my steering wheel and repaired it by using a Dremel, epoxy and high gloss, high temp black spray paint, got the idea from this video:

I just couldn't get the finish on some parts completely to my liking, ran out of time and patience, so ended up purchasing a mint condition steering wheel on Ebay Germany for €290-
I'm really pleased with it.

There are many on offer have a look here:
