Title: W111 unknown dash part - resolved!
Post by: wwheeler on September 07, 2015, 22:27:51
I recently removed the leather, wood and gauges from the dash of my '68 W111 280SE coupe. During the process, one white plastic spacer fell to the carpet. I never could figure out where it went. Seems like it fell just below the heater controls but not sure. Now some months later, I am installing all of the restored pieces and found another plastic piece just like the first (although dirty). This one was found in the dash frame again, near-ish to the heater controls.

I did not remove any of the cables or operating levers on the heater control. Does anybody have an idea where these parts go to? The hole in the center is about 3mm so for a small screw or rod.

Any help appreciated.

Wallace

Those are the rollers out of the heater / vent control levers.

Interesting. I did do a lot of work on this about 2 years ago but nothing on the current project. I guess they could fallen out back then and just stayed in the dash? Do you know specifically where they go?

There are (4) levers. Does each one have a roller?

Thank you for your help!!!!

OK. I will take a look and thank you!!!! Glad to figure that out now rather than to wait when it is all buttoned up.

I tried my best to figure out where exactly these go on the heater controls. I just can't see where they fit! My levers seem to work just fine and I want to put these back where they need to go. I would be greatly appreciative if you can pinpoint the spot for these.

Thanks.

After I sent the last message, a light bulb went off in my head. I looked at the very front of the levers, and sure enough found the other two rollers.

So they mount on a riveted pin that is on the very end of the levers. They ride in a channel along the front of the control frame and guide the lever as it moves. I guess it was so close to the dash frame, I couldn't see them. I believe the levers have enough movement that I can install these without removal.

For people having "sticky" heater lever operation, this is another area to look at. Make sure the channels are clean and do NOT use lube. It will only attract more dirt. The plastic roller is more than capable of moving smoothly when clean.
