Title: Euro Event 2016
Post by: Rick007 on May 28, 2015, 07:23:16
Dear members ,

After our successful Euro Event 2014 in the UK , organized by James , everybody is keen the know what the plans are for 2016.
Well since we gently persuaded James to organize the UK event , after our event in 2012 , we felt the need to try and get things going again.

During our stay in Goodwood I got talking with Johannes and Peter , 2 of our Northern Italian Members.  I knew them since Willingen and during my journey down south to Italy we visited them in Merano , where they live.  Merano is at the foot of the Alps on the south side. This part of Europe is one of the most beautiful places there is , mountains , history , good food , ambiance , and beautiful winding roads through the mountains. Merano itself is packed with history and the former health spa of queen Sissi ( you know the Movie ) . We got very impressed with the surroundings and really enjoyed our stay there .

So a plan emerged !  Johannes owns a great Hotel and Peter a Restaurant in the Botanical Gardens . I've been talking with them and they are willing to arrange things on there side. I've asked Paul , my friend and co-organizer in 2012 to help so we can coordinate and act as organizers.

So what do we have so far :

* we are trying to organize a Euro Event in Italy ( southern Tirol )  in 2016
* 23 September to 26 September 2016
* We initially have 20 Rooms available ( this means 20 Cars ! but we try to get some more )
* Budget : we try not to exceed the 2014 budget
* Paul will investigate a possibility to get our cars on a train or truck and we could fly over ...

We would like to know what you all think about our plans .... so please reflect and we will keep you posted !

And remember ....  First come first go !

Greetings ,

Rick

After the traffic queues last year, you never know ;D Which reminds me, I must book a hotel for this year's Revival :D

My brother now has a w123 coupe and has already said he'd be up for a waft across the alps if there's room!

Peter:
Is this still the same event we discussed in Willigen in 2013.
I thought the Italian owner of the hotel was going to open it for us whomever attended, not just 20 rooms.
Or is this a different place?

Dear Rick,

Perfect Idea. :D
Yes, I remember us talking and (pre-)planning this event with Johannes and Peter already on the parkning lawns at Goodwood last year. ;D

Definitely count me in!
Sadly I cannot make the same tour this year together with the German Pagodentreff folks but I definitely want to be in next year.

So, please count me in.
Depending on Aslam's (kampala) plan; we are attending with 2 - 3 people and 1 - 2 cars. If 2 cars, then I have to go with my 114.

Looking very much forward to 23 - 26 Sep 2016.

Tom, this is the same event. The rooms limit is the hotel owners prerogative. So places are limited, as Rick indicated.

So Peter and whomever,
With 20 rooms, that means 20 members plus wifes and friends.
Does anyone know if 50 or so members sign up , will they have to find other hotels or Gausthouses, or are these excess members on their own.

Like we stated its a first proposal...and we're trying to raise some interest .
We still have to verify the amount of rooms available and the interest there is for these plans ... Since the location is not as central as before we started with a proposal for 20 rooms .  It may be that not all could reside in the same hotel . Again this is a first plan and we're only checking for interest in this stage .   But since we do have a lot of interest already I will contact our friends in Sud Tirol and will discuss this.

We will keep you all posted ... But keep signing in for now....

Please all be aware...

If there is a limit on cars (which there may well be as it is tougher to organise for too many cars) then, hard though it may be:

Additionally, as the program firms up, at some point commitment will be asked for. Prompt payers take precedence.

I'm posting this message as a 'Public Service Announcement', not as an official statement. The organising committee and practical considerations (number of people that can be handled, hotel capacity, organisational ability) all add up to make a popular event like this very, very difficult to organise. Things may change, your mileage may vary...

I like to attend if there is a free passengier seat available in one of the Pagodas.

If so I can fly to the starting point (origin of the Pagoda if driven to the event) may this be somewhere in the UK, Holland, Poland, France Germany etc. I would of course share the cost of the gasoline. Once the event is done I would accompany the driver as long as the direction is north since I like to visit my brother in Germany afterward.

I'm posting this just in case there is one empty passengier seat .... Thanks!

I like Rolf-Dieter, would like to attend if there is a spare seat available in any car and like Rolf-dieter, would fly to where ever the start point is but also return to the start point to get home.

Update !

The organizing team will meet up in July on location, and we will work out more details.  So more announcements will follow afterwards.

But , and as Peter stated ,  there will be restrictions on the amount of attendees , and seniority.  Off course we would like that everybody could attend, but this is impossible to achieve, and will in the end only lead to a chaotic event which serves nobody.  So after our meeting in July we will have the definitive number of attendees we could place and the fixed data.

Thank you all for the interest , which is a stimulant for us to proceed.

The 2016 Euro Event Team.

 ;D ;D ;D
2116 indeed.....

But alas, even my short term plans are amiss.  Turns out MB will stop building the 2016 E350 sport wagon we are interested in in December.  Our dealer has offered to substitute an existing order they have in the system but a trip to Germany in December was not what we were thinking about.  Production for the new 2017 E350 wagon should start in early 2016 (the car is scheduled to be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2016) with expected deliveries in the spring.  So maybe a 2017 model?

The last Euro Event we attended in 2010, we rented a Pagoda in Stuttgart.  We thought maybe we could attend in 2016 with a new car but now I'm guessing that won't happen.

But then again, who knows what the future holds, even in 2116 :)

Update !

The holyday season has come to an end over here, so people are reachable again , and we continued with our plans for the 2016 Event.
Since my last post we've had a few team-meetings, and the plans are starting to get solid.

Many have signed in , and our first plan and possibility to handle 20 Cars .....is put overboard.  This means we now have set the maximum amount at 30 Cars and 60 Attendees.
And that's it my friends !  More would be to much to handle and would serve no one .

The date is set for 23...25 September 2016 .
This means we're expected to arrive Friday the 23th and depart Monday morning the 26th

We're in close contact with our friends in Italy and they will set up a very spectacular itinerary and program. At the moment we are waiting for the confirmation from our selected Hotel, because since we upgraded the event to 30 cars a bigger Hotel was needed , fitted within the budget and with enough capacity .  All Hotels are in beautiful surroundings over there so don't worry.
After this confirmation Paul and myself will start with the list of attendees ,and we will contact everyone with a PM in order to get all the information we need. This will also mean that at some time we will need a deposit to guarantee your place in the event.

For the ones that have a long distance drive over to Italy we planning a " half way " Hotel  in Germany , especially for our Northern and UK members this will be welcome , we think .

So that's it for now more will follow in the coming weeks.... to be continued .

Greetings from the 2016 Pagoda Event Team .

Latest update !

The confirmation from our Hotel is complete and confirmed !
However it means a slight change of plans .   Our arrival and departure has changed

Arrival    :                Thursday 22 September
Departure   :                Sunday 25 September

We agreed to this since we don't think this will involve too many problems for our attendees .
It may even be more convenient ...and even more relaxed for our return trip home.

Peter and Johannes are working out the program and I cannot reveal to much but ...does Stelvio ring any bells ?

What do we have to offer for our attendees :

Welcome aperitif and drinks.
3 Nights in a 5 star Hotel ... ( we will reveal the name later on ) , 3 times breakfast and evening dinner.

Lunch during our grand tour on Friday .  Lunch on Saturday
Gala evening with live music on Saturday evening !!

We think we are within budget (  somewhat equal to the 2014 Event ) and definitive figures will follow as soon as we have everything worked out in detail .
But I do want to point out that we will need a deposit not later than 31th of January 2016.  This and only this will ensure your place in the event.

We will start our list coming weeks and will contact everyone with a personal mail in which we will ask you for your details . And off course at the same time a reserve list .
Saying this I would like reach out to our loyal and first time attendees to join up asap because we want to avoid disappointment afterwards.  Seniority has a shelf life .....!

*  Peter , our friend in Merano ,  has 2 or maybe even 3 Pagodes he could rent out for a min of 2 days !  This will not be free of charge but we think it could be a very nice opportunity for our "overseas " members to drive a pagoda in the most beautiful mountains Europe .   If anyone would be interested in that let us know and we will divert it to Peter.

This is it for now ... More to follow..

The 2016 Pagoda Event team...

Transport .

There 'are some questions about a possibility to have a organized transport by truck or train to Italy .

I've been looking into that and even did the journey last year . We took the "car overnight train " from Den Bosch ( NL ) to Alessandria ( Italy )
For our Event this would not be suited since they only have a fixed time schedule and only run in high season. Also Alessandria is a 5 hour drive from Merano .

From Dusseldorf ( Germany ) there are more options but I still haven't found a train that goes to Bolzano , which would be the nearest town with a stop and unloading , within our window.
I would leave this to each and every one individually. I mean some of you would maybe connect a few additional day's to the trip .... be my guest .

A organized truck transport for a maximum of 6 or 8 cars is being mentioned and Paul is still looking into that , but I think it would not be feasible , and the drivers would still need to fly over to Milano or Innsbruck and then what ?  Rental car ?  Taxi ? Train ?  For me this would be more exhausting then driving with a stopover ...
The stopover / halfway hotel is under investigation and we're hoping to get a Hotel, known by us that would be right up our ally ... By the way this would not be a big hotel to accommodate every attendee . And it would mean additional costs for does who would want make use of that .  So as soon as we contact you with the invitation to participate ,we will ask you if you want to.

BTW Garry and Tom I will send your request to Peter so he can contact you with a proposal for the Pagoda Rental .

More to follow ...

For truck transport we could try Jan Tinga. (http://www.tingaauto.nl) He does this for many rallies, cost approx € 500 / car one way with 8 cars - but ask for a quote. He could drop the cars at the nearest place with an airport so that people would not need to hire cars locally.

I know Jan Tinga.

Hello Brian,

Wassenaar, Holland to Alessandria, Italy would be 1,170 KM and 11 1/2 hour drive under normal circumstances. With a Pagoda I would say driving about 400 KM a day you need 2 hotel stop overs .... In order not to overwork the little old lady.

Hope this helps. Happy and save travels

Cheers, Dieter

Edit ... Added BTW

BTW. .... Should you take the drive and need a passengier, I would be happy to help you drive back and forth as well as share the fuel cost with you. :) I then would fly back to Canada after the trip.

Guys ... we are not going to Allesandria .. but Merano . The distance from central Netherlands would be aprox 1050 Km ( 653 Ml )
with aprox 500 km a day it seams to us more then doable .   Surprised by the quote from Rolf-Dieter that our old SL's  would suffer ... ??  If your car is not up to this I would reconsider going at all.
These cars are made for cruising the German Autobahn ... don't forget .

As what transport is concerned , we will leave this to individual initiative... But please !  and I do want to emphasize this ...Wait for your invitation to participate !
After this you can organize as much as you want and we would support you , but not before please.

At the end of this month we will get together again to complete our listings......

Greetings from The 2016 Event team .

Sorry about this Rick .... I picked up Allesandria from one of the earlier posts ... My bad.

Of course our cars can go longer distances ... I just picked an average distance (in 2013 my car made a 1,600 mile round trip to Williamsburg, VA. In 1 1/2 days each way). :)

That you have limited spots is also clear we all I'm sure are waiting for your final list of invited participants. Thanks for organizing this!

Rick,

I read through the posts and have not yet seen a specific request for a deposit.  I assume that you will request money once a list of participants is provided and we receive an invite.  Correct?

Again, thanks for organizing this spectacular event.

All the best,

Tom

Got to agree with you there, Rick. In my experience the cars will go on forever; my ability to tolerate an ever-numbing bum and the propensity for hearing loss would seem to be the limiting factors in any long 113 drive. My driver's side seat lists ever so slightly to one side creating the perfect conditions for a somewhat painful curvature of the spine. I even took the seat out at the weekend to examine my options (including the pool noodle), but there's no space. Assuming I catch the selectors eye for the trip, I will need to sort something out in the seating department.

I should think Rolf-Dieter that distances in Canada and US are way longer, if going to events...our 650 Miles must be peanuts for you guys.
And James... yes you are right the comfort is also 60's ... although I must say I find the Mercedes seats very comfortable in comparison to other period classic cars .

As mentioned the invites and request for deposit will follow ...

We were just in Alto Adige (Süd Tirol) last week.  Not with Carling, of course.

It was snowing up in the mountains, but beautiful sunshine this week.  The food, the people, and the scenery are lovely.  The roads have to be planned carefully--you need to know where you're going.  The beautiful mountain roads are not Pagoda roads for the most part, but around Merano will be fine...except for the apple harvest, which puts TONS of really slow big machinery on the roads!

Please let us know if we can help planning...don't know if we will be able to attend (new 73 Interceptor coming), but sooo much going on.

UPDATE ...

Well our event is actually going to happen ... and we are booked solid !!
With 30 cars / 60 attendees and a reserve list, I think we can safely say that there is a serious interest for our event.

At this moment we're sending the invites and programs .
Off course we don't have a personal Email address from everybody, so in the personal mail you receive, and you reply... state your mail-address please , and we will send you the program with further details.

A general flyer will be posted here soon.

There seems to be only one car sleeper train left to Italy  :  Düsseldorf-Verona

Terminal Düsseldorf:
Schlägelstraße
40227 Düsseldorf
GPS: 51.22103,6.79732

Terminal Verona:
Verona Porta Nuova Piazza 25 Aprile
Postcode: 37900
GPS:  45.42943, 10.98066

It only goes once a week ; departures on Fridaynights:

16/9/2016  18.36h    arrival  17/9/2016 09.45h
23/9/2016  18.36h    arrival  24/9/2016 09.45h

There is NO return train avaliable ( the last one returns on Saturday 24/9)
Düsseldorf: 2,5 hours from ferry terminal IJmuiden/Hoek van Holland

I dont think a private lorry will be doable with only 3 participants but will wait a little longer we will see.

A word of caution... transport trains that are open will damage the paint job on our old cars. Our paint is "soft" compared to that of modern cars. An open railway carriage will let small metal particles and soot attack your paint job. Friends of mine used a train to transport their Pagoda, just waxed, to Italy. Upon arrival they felt that the paint surface was rough to the touch: all sorts of particles had embedded themselves into the paint. They felt that these were shavings from the metal wheels and tracks.

It needed a heavy polish job (removing the top layer) to restore the paint.

Your mileage may vary, but I would never put my Pagoda on an open train.

I put my VW Kombi on a train from Adelaide, South Australia to Darwin in Northern Australia a distance of around 3000km.

When I picked it up it was covered in a fine oily soot that was into everything and a real pain to remove before use.  Every time you touched it it left an oily smudge on your hands, cloths and I would not do it with an old car again as they cannot just be run through a car wash to get it off :o  When I say it was into everything, I mean everything. Poor Kombi never recovered!

Several years ago whilst travelling to Brescia to compete in the Mille Miglia (we were in a Bentley Speed Six with six other Bentley's) we drove from the UK to Paris and loaded the cars onto the overnight train, we were able to cover the cars with fitted covers so that when we arrived in Italy there was no paint or dirt problems.
If this service is still available it could be a good alternative.
Title: Re: Euro Event 2016
Post by: Flyair on November 15, 2015, 23:58:04
Let me share our experience: using the normal car cover certainly protects from dust and other damaging substances, however it also has some flaws. The movement of train will result in a permanent air flow on the cover, with abrasive effect on the paint. Some of our colleagues found it out to their deception at the end of the transport.

We have used a self-adhesive large plastic tapes (1m or 1 yard wide) that are also used in professional transport of new cars across the continent. At least here you can buy it in any shop with building materials. It is called stretch, as it is somewhat flexible. The advantage of that is that once well applied, it does not move against the body that it is supposed to protect.

One more word on that... if the train platforms have 2 floors, make sure you protect the soft top, windows and all the flat areas (in fact the entire upper body) with the same protective material. Our Pagodas have this nasty leakage habit, so the dripping fluids from the cars transported on the upper floor can be very detrimental to the cars at the lower floor.

Regarding Transport Holland/Italy
We have just returned to UK, but whilst in Holland I was given a contact for transportation by road.
I called in Leimuiden,(near Amsterdam airport) and spoke with Jan
Tinga of Vakgarage Tinga Autoservice BV.
I explained our situation and told him I would put my findings on the
website and see how many are interested.

Vakgarage Tingaburg
Bakhuizenlaan 2
2451 AA Leimuiden
info@tingaauto.nl
0172 508115
www.tingaauto.nl

He  is experienced in classic and rallye car transport, and has an open 8
car and a closed 5 car unit.
He says he often collects classic cars after events , as they sometimes
breakdown !

He can offer a "combination" trip as he often travels to Italy for about 700
(+ BTW) Euro either way for 1 car.
For 2 or more cars it would be about 600 euro (+ 21% BTW) one way.
For  4000 Euro you can have the full 8 car transporter !

He is happy to do Holland to Italy, or Italy to Holland, or both.
The cars would have to be left with him in Leimuiden,  a couple of days
before, and an agreed drop point (Hotel) in Italy would also be needed.

You cannot travel with the car so would need to use a train or plane to then get to Italy.

He would happily provide transport to Schiphol airport for anyone dropping
off a car.

Dolly and I have still to concider the options.
The cartrain Dusseldorf leaves about 220 km drive at each end, and I am
worried about the dire warnings from this site about paintwork damage on the train
journey.

We are thinking maybe, of a slow drive down through Germany to
Italy over a few days before the event, and spending a week or so in Merano,
and then maybe getting  Tinga Autoservice to bring the car back to Holland, and we come on a
train.
We are fluid at the moment so open to all suggestions.

If there is any interest in this road transportation option  please post here - at least we have plenty of
time to sort ourselves out.

Please feel free to contact vakgarage Tinga and speak with Jan if you need.

Paul

Greetings Forum members ,

Enclosed you will find our newsletter / flyer we send out to every attendee . If not …you did not send in your personal Email address.
The Flyer which was send out contains a bit more information , costs etc etc ..  so if you received an invitation but no newsletter please send your address and we will send it to you.

For now , and although it may alter , this is the program. We hope it's appealing , we like to think so…

A small note on transport to Merano … We did the train in 2014 from Dusseldorf to Allesandria , and really without damage what so ever . Maybe it depends on the time of year but i can tell you it is doable and is being don by a lot of classic car enthusiasts who do not trust their cars to drive such a distance.  Or those who do not like the comfort it offers on these stretches . Take your time and enjoy the ride would be my advise .
Paul and i will scout a half way Hotel and maybe a nice southern Germany / Austria route to Merano. But off course this is for everyone a personal choice , as long as we get there together .

Thank you for your enthusiasm we will keep you posted with our progress……

Nevertheless we're puzzled by some members who expressed there interest , and then remained silent...???
So after many mails , calls and various methods of contact ... we have 2, and maybe 3,  places opened up again for wannebee attendees .

So if there is interest we still have some places for our Event on 22 , 23 , 24 , 25 September 2016 , Merano Dolomites Italy .

Which transport and times you are taking!
A possible on route meet might be good  ;)

I haven't finalised my planning yet but I'm currently thinking of driving from the middle of the Netherlands to Merano in a leisurely way. We'd probably leave on the 20th, in the morning, from the Middle of the Netherlands. Getting to Meran is a 1050 km drive (via motorways). I typically use the book "Links und Rechts der Autobahn (http://www.linksundrechts.com)" to find charming hotels on the way, depending on how far I get. So I do not pre-book.

First night about halfway, around the Karlsruhe-Stuttgart area (I've been to the Mercedes Museum a number of times, but I might visit it briefly depending on time).

And then, rather than taking the road via Innsbruck over the Brenner pass, I might take the road through the Oetztal (which is a lovely sightseeing road), overnighting in Hochgurgl, where we have gone skiing many times. At the Timmelsjoch Hochalpen strasse (http://www.timmelsjoch.com) there is a new motorcycle museum that might be fun for an hour or so. The road down from the mountain is pretty spectacular, with so many hairpins that you'll be tired of it by the end. The last time I drove it is was pretty hairy...

I'm not fixing anything, or booking hotels, as progress depends on traffic and so on, but if Pagoda's want to tag along... you're welcome!

Peter

Peter, I have tried to follow you on previous outings in our SLs. "Leisurely" is not how I would describe your driving style!  ;)

That said, and being that I'm not too far from you here in the lowlands, I'd be happy to tag along for a "leisurely" drive south. My only uncertainty right now is whether I can leave on the 20th, but I think I can. My friend Tim may be joining me again, but he's not sure yet about his travel schedule in September (he works for an Italian auto supplier now, so he is frequently making trips back to headquarters, often with a layover in Amsterdam). So we have some coordinating yet to do.

Please keep me posted.

Best,
Brian

I'll keep you informed on our plans. What is Martijn or John, and Rick doing?

Ha! Yeah, sure, blame the wife. Though, I agree, Karin seems to share your preference for the fast lane, too. Must be why you two get along so well ...

Martijn and Jon also plan to drive.  Not sure about Rick.

Ok and we're back .

So the Event is only a few months away, and we are working on several things at the moment to make this a smooth and enjoyable Event.
The places still available a month ago are all filled and booked now. And for now we're not taking any more in.

So its time to send in your introductions ... with these guidelines ;

A small introduction :  Max 20 sentences ( Who are you....Where you're from...  What you do for a living  ... Why you love your car ... Who is the one sitting beside you ...) you what we mean ...  With a picture of you and your car... That's it.  Please send this to my mail address before the end of this month .... Yes I know not much time but it will take you no more then 1 hour of your time ...  :)

Then for those who would like make use of our  "half way Hotel " In Freudenstadt Germany ... Please let me know this month .

A new newsletter with extended information about our trip is in the making and we will add a lot of information about the program .

And last but not least ... The additional Payment of the budget should and must be in before the end of August . So if you are planning a holyday make your payment before you leave ... Or it will be spent I know how it works.

For questions or remarks please contact me directly or with a PM .

Greetings from the 2016 Euro Event Team ..

Rick,

how much should we transfer to you ?

Peter
Title: Re: Euro Event 2016
Post by: Rick007 on July 06, 2016, 14:02:51
Good question .. I will send each and every attendee a separate mail . Because there are some single members that will attend , there is some deduction in cost for those .  The team will work out how to calculate this . It will not be as simple as to divide it into 2 ... because there are costs that will not be affected if there is participation with one or two. We normally work with the knowledge that there is a team present.
And yes a single attendee is discriminated in costs ... As is usual the case in Hotels . I will contact you all for this asap.
Normal teams ( that is with 2 present ) can transfer the amount stated in our flyer , but again we will contact you as well.

Then there is a question how to send the introduction ;

Well a simple text document and a not too big picture separate please . You can even just put your text in a mail ( only max 20 sentence )   and enclose a picture separate .

Greetings the 2016 Euro Event Team

An important message from the organizers:

Please, please have your mechanic / garage check your brake system before departure. Do tell him you are planning to drive 6 alpine passes in one day. During this trip you will cover large height differences. You will be climbing, but also descending a great deal. Having good brakes makes the difference between having an accident and having great fun!

Verify your brake lines, and ensure there is no air in them. Bleed all the air. Make sure your brake fluid is current, and certainly does not have any water in it (brake fluid is hygroscopic, and will attract water, which greatly diminishes brake performance when it gets hot -- and believe me, it will).

When descending, do brake using the engine. So (also if you have an automatic gear) descend in the same gear that you drove uphill in.

Note, you are taking part at your own risk. Fix these things now, before departure. Last year a German Pagoda group had problems with brakes as they were unprepared.

Perfect Peter!  The other critical system is the cooling system. There are some very long steady uphill climbs with few if any breathing spaces.  Good idea to check out the cooling system at the same time the brakes are being reviewed.

Sorry for sounding a like a cowboy. I'm not, I'm serious about maintaining my car.

Mikael... the message was not aimed at you, but at everyone. I rally my car and know about this kind of preparation. Not everyone does, and this is stuff one needs to do before setting off!

Ralph, absolutely. A well working cooling system is important too. But if it does not work well, at least it will not kill you!

Yes very good advice to make sure your car is ready to go mountain driving .

By now everyone has received its last request for the final payment , please do before the end of August.
You can reply on my Email address to send in your personal introduction ( 20 sentence and picture ) for our so called "facebook ".
Also please mention your partner or co-driver in this mail . From some of you it is still a mystery who is sitting in your car beside you.

We will send you nr 2 Flyer coming week with all the details , addresses , tel numbers , and program .

Also I want to add a request for a second car plate, since Martijn will need one for his wall of honor in Mijdrecht and I want to add one to my wall of honor in SoCal.

Sure am looking forward to this!!!

Hi John,

You will need to seek out the organisers, I suggest Rick007 and see if there were any vacant spaces that have come up.  I believe it was pretty much booked out at the beginning of the year but there may have been some drop off’s. There was very limited spaces available. If you are not able to get abroad this Tour, the next will be in Two years time assuming there is a couple of volunteers and will be well advertised on the Forum.

Certainly a few from UK attending as well as USA and Australia.

Hello Brian ,

Yes don't worry , no news is good news. I will only contact you if something is wrong , or not received  :)
But I will always respond at pressing matters. And you can always give me a PM or a direct mail again, I've been away and on the road some weeks so I might have missed some messages.

Since we're on the subject a few things for the attendees ...

First of all .. Do remember that your definitive payment should be in by the end of this month , to ensure your place !
And do not forget to mail me your introduction for our " Face book " ( 20 sentence and a picture of you and car ).

Then there is the so-called "half way Hotel " I do have some takers all ready , but if you would like to join please let me know asap.
Flyer nr 2 will be send out this week with additional information , and our local members in Italy are making good progress with the final preparations ... So things are running smooth.

Greetings from the 2016 Pagoda Euro Event Team ..

Not too long to go now.  Planning the trip down to Merano.  Of course, can drive the whole way with stay at the stop over hotel (who is going from the UK, want to hook up for journey?) Or could drive to Dusseldorf and put the car on the train to Verona overnight.  Any thoughts welcome.

Hello guys ,

Just à few weeks and we will meet at Merano ....

Still need some introductions and a few payments , but I think we nearly there.

A few FAQ. ....

Q : Is there room to spend some time by ourself ?
A : yes surtenly , nothing is obligatory.

Q : What is the dress code for the Gala evening ?
A : well let's keep it casual , but a surten kind of so called " City chic " would be very nice.

Q : The tour on Friday seems very long and the exhausting ...
A : There will be a few escapes on this route .. But we know you will want do this tour , it s beautiful.

Q : Can we stay longer in the hotel ?  Or can we book ahead ?
A : you can , but must arrange this with the hotel directly .

Q : How is the budget translated to the expenses made ?
A : After the event every one of you will receive a full overview of the costs , any surplus will be returned to the attendees.

Q : Did the Event Team order good weather ?
A. : yes we sure did ....

Then there is some bad news about the half-way hotel , I just received a mail stating that our option will not be open anymore . We are very sorry , but there were only 3 takers and we could not keep this open anymore . In the vesinety of the Black Forrest there are a zillion hotels and I'm sure that you will find a hotel over there .  I'm still in contact with a few hotels and will keep you informed when we can book a few more rooms . They are just not that keen on groups for one night .

That's it for now , but please keep on sending your introductions ....

Greetings from the 2016 Euro Event team

Jonny,

Short drive? Amsterdam to Merano looks like 1,132 KM drive ... On my last Euro trip I took the train it was very relaxing. With a rail pass and retal car availability at every train station it was most convenient and something I will do again next year. On the other hand to drive gives one more freedom something we all love about our cars.

Enjoy your trip!

We started the day by taking the train to Hamburg, picking up the car from the shop. It has had some service made. Now we're spending the night just south of Kassel. I kindly asked to bring the Pagoda to the room, but no, they replied rather stubbornly it had to stay outside, all alone in the forrest.

PS. I always try to stay in B&Bs (Bed and Breakfast as we say here or Zimmer Frei in Germany outside city limits). I somehow feel it keeps the car safer then in a hotel parking lot.

Hi James,

I think the watch may need a new crystal looks a bit faded to me (might just be the photo angle), what do you think? Hmmmm lets see what can be done about that. Anyone on the trip that can disassemble and reassemble the watch Hmmm ... Then he might not need it bet his Pagoda dash clock works just fine.

The watch is an old, faded Swatch.

Today we drove to Längenfeld, Austria. We started off on the Autobahn from Neustadt to Stuttgart on the A8, then took the smaller roads via Bad Urach, Biberach to Memmingen and then to border at Fussen.  Lots of delays at the Fernpaß. On to our hotel in Längenfeld, where we met up with John and Lia Dreu. Tomorrow we take the Timmelsjoch pass on to Meran.

The car is doing very well after it's been hardly used for over a year. 500kms without a hitch yesterday, and again today. Speeds of up to 140 km/h on the Autobahn, pulling strongly in the mountains, braking sharply on descents, and surviving start and stop traffic.

Checked the oil and coolant tonight, all looking good so far.

Dear all,

If you are not here in Merano, you are not missing much. Most of us had to drive over 1000 km's of motorway and autobahn driving, sometimes at speeds in excess of 140 km/hour (those pesky Germans with their fast cars) just to arrive here safely. Those unfortunate enough to come from places north of Meran (that's 95% of us) even had to navigate challenging mountain passes with 20+ hairpin bends just to get here.

And that with cars averaging over 45 years of age. Today, to add insult to injury we had to be at breakfast at 07:00 te receive a briefing and to depart on a gruelling drive at 08:00. It feels like being in the army even though James H is not here. He's been training Peter M and Rick 007 apparently.

Then, after getting up so early we had to drive at least 312 km's today. Not on straight, level roads. Oh no, We were meant to punish our precious possessions yet again. Slopes too steep to take a lift to, descents so scary your brakes would break out in fire. All our beautifully polished cars dirty, filthy and rims caked with brake dust. It's a good thing if you missed this.

In order to convince you all never to attend a European Event again I enclose some pictures. NOTE: not for sensitive eyes.

The first photo: appalling (appealing) refreshments at the first stop at 11:00 in the morning, note how the Pagoda boot is misused.
Photo 2: the obligatory, cheesy mirror photograph
Photo 3: Something to accompany the drinks of photo one, rightly served from a lowly R107, driven by Peter M's dad

(ps: that cheese was not tasty at all, oh no. Nor was the speck!)

Fantastic !

What a great event.   Thanks to the organizing team, Johannes, Peter M., Rick B., Paul H., & Ralph.   You guys pulled off a world class event that will be quite memorable.   Bravo !     And of course many many thanks.

This organizing group even had a team heading to each stop point prior to us arriving so they could have a photographer ready, and could guide us all to parking etc.    This is only one of many examples of the work they put in.

I am sure there will be lots of comments from those who attended and many great photos.   So here are just a couple of quick shots to give you a glimpse.

I took a train from Paris to Mannheim, Germany where I met up with Achim with his Pagoda, hopped in as co-pilot and we headed  south.   Awesome.

A truly memorable trip.

Thanks to ALL the organisers of this event and especially the italians Peter, Peters dad, father in Law and Johannnes and the photographers (sorry i don't know the names) for making us feel especially welcome. As Kampala said, it was the little touches that made this a very special event. From the wines, cheeses and hams at the top of mountains to making sure and asking if everybody was ok, enjoying meals and having a good time. Supplying cars for our American and Australian members and having back up and full photography.

And the roads and mountains cannot begin to be described in words and 2dimensional photo and videos but we will all try over the next few days by uploading pictures.

Thanks you all so much!

Prost and saluti!

It's hard to put in words how much fun we had in Italy. It was far beyond expectations.
I have published some of my photos on the Flickr website. Then you might get an impression what a wonderful time we had. Take a cup of coffee and take your time to enjoy these. Most photos can be best viewed on a big screen. But using the Flickr app on a tablet works well too.

Thanks to everybody who helped organising this great event. Especially Peter, Johannes, Rick and Paul.

And now everyone knows why I like to be ahead or behind your car on these road trips. Those are far and away the best shots of my car I have ever seen, especially the ones in motion.  And the portrait shots of the participants are very well done. Kudos!

I am back home today and will load my pics into a Flickr album and share here later, but mine pale in comparison to your professional-quality shots.  Thanks for recording the memories!

They are open to download. Included at the end are quite a few tourist shots from the Bavarian village of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany, where the Dutch contingent spent the night on our return drive to The Netherlands.  Martijn and I did a photo shoot of our cars in the town square early on Monday morning; we even had a few Japanese tourists taking pics of our cars on the square.

Enjoy!  ;D

Great, Great, Video Oz.  When we were in all these tunnels between Bolzano and Passo Pennes, Peter (March) mentioned that we were in the old tunnels because the newer tunnels were closed for maintenance.  I'll bet the newer ones would have been a lot less fun!!

Fun??  Actually Achim has a bit of a worried look on his face!

Great pics and videos,

My favourite has to be Achims expression during parts of  Ozs 2 minute clip.....

We took a slow drive through Germany for our return trip.
I did a Zeppelin flight in Friedrichafen on the way back to Holland &
We are staying in Gouda for a while.

A fantastic European Event in a great location, thanks to all the organisers.
I do not know of many other 50 year old cars that would attempt the mileages and routes we have recently
To get 26 Pagodas together in the Tyrol is an event in itself.

So far we have done 1800 miles at 19 miles to (imperial) gallon.

I will post something when we return to uk next week.

Hello Everyone,

We just arrived back home. Following the fantastic Euro event, we continued to travel for another fantastic week in beautiful Italy. Along the route, the car's boot was quickly filled up with good wine, salami, and cheese. I came to think that Achim's idea for a tow trailer is not a bad one, considering all the good stuff you can buy down there. You need lots of space, and a trailer would certainly be practical. Was there ever an MB option code for an original tow trailer, perhaps with matching back lights and leather lining? I wouldn't ever dream of jeopardising originality, travelling the Pagoda in style.

On our way back we even ran into "Restaurante Pagoda"(!) in Verona.

It was really great meeting you all. Many thanks to the organisers that made a great job in turning the event into a lifelong memory. Although of course the the 320 km mountain run was a tad too short for my personal taste, I could easily continue doing that for another week...! Susanne did however believe 320 kms of spirited driving in the mountains were adequate for the moment..  ;)

Again - Thank you!

Mikael & Susanne

What a spectacular Event !   :) :D ;D

It was absolutely stunning. Really was happy that I was allowed participating. That was way worth the +1200 kms trip down to Suedtirol from Osnabrueck
(although a bit too long for those 18 hours .... totally without coffee .... ::) :o )

Hardly anything can be mentioned that hasn't been said by the others.
Reviewing my own few pictures I made, I realize how crapy these are in comparison to the phantastic and absolutely professional shots Martijn, Jon and Brian made.

That's why here is only one - two absolute great chaps   :)

Hope to be able to participate the next European Event again - with my beloved W114
 ;)

Thanks for all and to all  - especially to Peter M, Johannes, Rick & Paul - absolutely superb and flawless organization ! :) ;) :D

Don't I make this kind of wrinkeld-up face all the time (more or less) ?  ;)

Oh no, no, don't worry.  ;D
This was only because I was a bit concerned when Paul was overtaking us - I was afraid because of the truck coming so soon from the opposite direction - could have nearly hurt our beloved Paul ...

I did have this look already before ???  Huh?
Oh no, no, that's only why 'I have already seen it coming ...'

 ;)

Best,

Achim can you remove the second photo! Otherwise I'll have to Photoshop it and add a wide rain coat to hide the truth.  :o

Went back to the Trauttmansdorff Castle on Sunday afternoon to take the long route around the garden (and have another helping of Apfelstrudel at Peter March's excellent restaurant  :) ) and climbed up the two viewing platforms. What a magnificent setting.

Peter M.,  many  thanks again for shepherding me to and from the train station and around town!

Achim I had to test my newly overhauled engine somewhere and in those tunnels the engine's  roaring is even more expressed, so... The truck seems closer on video than it was in reality but if I caused you some concerne I apologize for that.
For sharing the pics maybe consider dropbox a handy app for sharing stuff

regards to you all

They include this photo of the two goofy Americans ...

Dear 2016 Euro Event Attendees ,

I'm happy to report you that we have stayed within budget en even have the staggering amount of € 1,44 left on the account .
I hope you all agree that I will drop this in charity deposit box ... somewhere I don't know yet.

All bills are paid in full , and we managed to pay back a substantial amount to the attendee that was stranded on the way over .
I did send him the shirts , and shield .  Still have 2 Shirts ( xxL )  and one rally shield for those who want it .
So its a wrap ... Will send out the balance sheet asap .

Finally I would like to thank everyone for attending and making our 2016 Event unforgettable and unique.
Will be a tough job to beat this one in 2018 .....

The 2016 Euro Event Team signing off ...

Rick, we have a saying that Charity begins at home  ;D
Thank you for all the organisation to you and your organising partners, it was all done to perfection, including the weather.
To be honest I'm having withdrawal symptoms and so looking forward to our meet in the not so distant future wherever it may be  8)

A huge thank you to all that turned up as well.

Excellent job all around, Rick. Other clubs I have belonged to have organized these kinds of events with the help of professional tour organizers, yet the pros haven't done half as good a job as your team did at such a reasonable price. Congrats and thanks again!

And by all means, let's try to arrange a smaller-scale event for the "off year" of 2017, like was done last year in the Netherlands with Martijn's help.

Happy Motoring!

Brian

Hi Jonny,

The car drove back perfect! So as yet I've only filled the oil and put the hardtop on for winter, ill have it looked at in more detail next year.
All the best  :)

I left Australia for the Europe Tour 2016 on 16 September and after a fantastic three days with a great group of people from all around the world, I headed back to Uk to pick up a cruise ship that was repositioning to Sydney Australia.  W

Well I finally arrived back home today after 47 days at sea, having left Southampton on 28 September.

Now for summer days and some Pagoda driving...............

Hello Peter ,

Yes the first talks are already taking place , destination unknown.
But we're open for suggestions ???  Iceland would be great yes I know    :)

Off course South Tirol Italy,  is tough to beat.  But we know there are several beautiful places we can visit.
Then again there could be other members who would like to organize an event ?  Preferable local members in a nice area we can visit ?

But make no mistake there will be a 2018 Euro Event.  For now we better look at the other side of the pond at this years PUB in Virginia .

Greetings ,
