Title: Green upholstery and carpet sources?
Post by: geert1000 on May 13, 2015, 20:43:12
Hello all,
My late '67 250SL has 2212 green MB tex upholstery, and 6213 green carpet. I need to match it. I'm in California and would love a source for both.
I've tried GAHH, gotten only leather as available and waiting for a sample. Is their green sample carpet (#MB-8 Green) the same as original? Mine it sooo ... faded I can't even tell.
I got green vinyl from World and the texture of the smooth and perforated is close but not the same.
Any other sources preferably in the U.S.?
Thanks, Geert

Geert,

Fuggetaboutit.  :o
Green MB-Tex is one of the hardest colors to match.

The original smooth green MB-Tex with the smooth texture is long, long NLA and so is the corresponding square weave carpet for your car.

You have to live with minor compromises.
Try to find the best matching MB-Tex you can get and have it re-dyed, if necessary.

As to the carpet, try KHM in Esslingen, Germany.
They really have decent materials.

Look here:
https://www.cabrio.de/khm/en/carpet-materials#haargarn

The materials 417 or 418 look pretty correct, don't they?

Viel Glück

I will second the recommendation for KHM.  They will send you a sample if you ask of their carpet and also their leathers.

I agree with Garry and 114015.
KHM is your best bet.
I utilized their carpet for my car.
As far as green carpeting contact Alex D, he had a similar problem with a tourquoise interior.
He found someone at the university Of North Carolina who might be able find the right formula to dye a white carpet to torquose.
I will meet him at Blacklick in September and he is to let me know how he made out.
If it was a success he will have the car at Blacklick.

Gary, that should be interesting to see a beige color car with a full Torquois interior.
I know I am spelling it wrong, but do not want to get up and find a dictionary for the correct spelling.

GAHH made a complete set of interior pieces for my 230SL from a Porsche brown vinyl since "bronze" was NLA. Good match. The ashtray cover is the original color vs the seats in the Porsche color. Essentially, they allowed me to pick any vinyl they had and made a set to order. No upcharge!

Yes, that color in MB Tex is NLA. It was the color of my 1967 230SL interior and I tried for years to match it in both the carpet and MB Tex. I could never find anything close to the original so in the end, I took the opportunity to use a different color all together. I went with an MB tex and square weave carpet in blue. I suppose if I ever do decide to restore to original color scheme I could go with a leather interior.

Hi,

Tom, Sandcrab59, is correct, I have been trying to find original turquoise colored carpet for 4 years now, it is NLA.  However my hard headedness is not giving up that easily.  I have tried 50+vendors from all over the world, nobody has it.  To make a custom run of the turquoise color carpet will cost $10K.  I tried several carpet dying companies, not even close.  They tried dying white German Square Weave samples from GAHH, German Auto,,.  Now I am working with a College Professor, whose PH D is in Color Textile Science, if he can't match the color than I might give up or come up the $10K.  Several people have told me that the faded turquoise color is nice, and I even considered trying to match that, which would be a light grey.

If I am missing something please let me know, always looking for ideas and suggestions.

Thanks,
Alex

Tom

In my quest for acceptable carpet I contacted a company in Canada called Itermecanica.  They build the best reproduction Porsche 356 on the market.   Long story short they had a custom job in which they took square weave carpet and tinted it.  I know it's not exactly what you're looking for but might be better than nothing.

I think what your looking for is much like what was available in the earlier cars like the 220seb and 230sl. Its a lighter olive green.
I tried all of the well known interior suppliers who specialize in Mercedes interiors and the only offerings in green were few and much darker (like that of the 280SL 280Se and newer).
I got in touch with Garry at Auto Custom Leathers in Ludlow MA see:

http://www.autocustomleathers.com/

By the way their website does not do them justice. He came up with the right color. Because he was within 120 miles of my location he came out and evaluated my car's needs and took the entire interior back with him and when he was done he delivered it all back. They did an excellent job and their pricing was reasonable for all that he did.

See the attached pictures.

I see the conversation has gone a bit turquoise, ha!
I've given up on the correct green square weave for my car and have ordered dark tan from GAHH w/avocado binding. It's neutral, and a nice contrast.
For the green MB tex, I have pretty much settled on World Upholstery's 164 green, but will check into KHM as well.
BTW, was the center of seat material a "basket weave"?  (World only offers an "embossed" in the green I compromised with)
This car will remain a "driver" for now, as it is a lovely no-rust, original paint, grey-beige body/green top, manual trans., one owner car.
Thanks all so far.

The pictures don't do the actual color justice. The green I got was the closest option I could have found for the early original 230sl 220seb green. And the basket weave is there. I will post more up to date pictures.
There are 2 kinds of green square weave available. I got the darker green square weave roughly 10 years ago for my 1965 230SL which also happens to be originally green.
I guess I'm  a green guy by my car's originality.

Geert:

Not sure what part of California you're in, but I've been very happy both the material and installation at K&H Upholstery in Garden Grove, CA. Family run business, great attention to detail, and they get great material:

K&H Auto Upholstery, attn:Nicole
11611 Salinaz Ave, Garden Grove, CA 92843
(714) 530-2468

I've also heard that World Upholstery in Santa Clarita, CA is great.

Best,

j.

Nice, but have I made a terrible mistake ordering a dark tan square weave with green binding? I just ordered it Friday. There still may be time to change it to a green. (which looks good in Jim's car, but I didn't like the sample)

I'm in San Luis Obispo, but may be in Santa Clarita and L.A. next week. I'll look into K&H and World. Thanks

Thanks Perry, I will probably go with the GAHH green square weave. Though it doesn't quite match the smaller loop, and subtle green color from under the seats. Fade from age under seats?

Your definitely dealing with fade and age even from under the seats.

Best of luck in getting what you want. Keep us abreast in how you make out.

Hello all,
I just received my green square weave carpet kit from GAHH and it looks great !
I'm more and more glad that I have a uniquely colored car. (still original Grey/beige body, dark green top and caps, green interior)
the carpet color and weave count were just minor compromises. Darn close to original!
Life gets that way sometimes.
Thanks to all for the input.

Again thanks for the good input of scenarios.
Next time I drive the car into daylight I'll take and post a couple of pictures.
Oh yes, I do have a question about using a product like "Dynamat" in my car.
I will love the quiet, but will it "contaminate" such an original, no rust car by "hiding" the awesome solid floor?
