Title: Number of low grille six cabriolets built was only 200?
Post by: perry113 on August 16, 2014, 01:42:38
Is this accurate to say that there were only 200 low grille six cylinder cabriolet's built? Is this specific to model year 1970 only?
see:
http://www.goodingco.com/vehicle/1970-mercedes-benz-280-se-cabriolet/

I would like to know where Gooding got this information. Can anyone verify this?

Regards
Peter

This site http://mercedes.heckflosse.nl/  indicates that six cylinders were continued to made along with the V-8 until 1971. I think sales were low because everybody went with the V-8. This site would seem to indicate that based on the ratio of six cylinder cabs to coupes earlier, 200 might be close to accurate.

Looks like those prices of W111s are really starting to rise. I just hope the parts don't go up to match the selling prices!

We have had a 1970 280se low grille cab for a number of years.  I always thought that they made around 700 but that was because I looked at the factory serial number runs and came up with roughly 700 years ago.  Still very rare.

Eric.
I would love to see pictures of your car :)

Since my original above request I did spend some time on the follow site
http://mercedes.heckflosse.nl/
I found the follow information

In 1969 there were a total of 2501 2.8's and 176 3.5's built
In 1970 there were a total of 613 2.8's and 3300 3.5's built
In 1971 there were a total of 68 2.8's and 1026 3.5's built
Of the above information it does not separate coupes from cabriolets. Nor does the 1969 production numbers of 2501 2.8's separate out low and high grille cars. One can only assume that if they made only 176 3.5's in 1969 that the number of low grill 2.8's was even less.

I'm fairly certain there were a far low number of low grille 2.8's than there were 3.5's mainly because most buyers were willing to spend the extra money of the V8 option.

Ok....I think that is where I came up with the 700 number.....but like you pointed out, that number included both coupe and convertible.   Maybe the 200 number is very accurate.   I had a coupe years ago and my brother had a 69 high hood cab that I wanted....I stumbled a upon the low hood and we have had it ever since.   I drove it to work with top down in good weather always with a smile on my face. Now she is on a rotisserie getting spruced up.   Hope to be driving her next spring.
