Title: How to wire up fog Lights
Post by: Bob G on April 08, 2003, 18:57:05
I talked to a German gentelman at the Palm Springs concours who told me an intresting law in Germany. The optional fog lights or driving lights can not operate when the headlights are on. they must operate separately according to German motoring law.
I wanted to know if anyone had heard of this and had their optional fog/driving lights wired in this fashion.

Yes, in Switzerland too fog lights are wired to work with side lights only. They had to be rewired to work with low beam for the U.K.

Are you talking about the fog lights in the main light cluster, or the lights that mount directly to the chrome bumper?

The light switch on my (US) 1969 280 SL activates the fog lights (incorporated in the Euro-style headlamps,I don't have separate units on the bumper) by pulling the knob towards the driver - and I am pretty sure they work with the headlights on, either on high or low beam. They also work with just the courtesy lights on. Even though the car is a US model, the wiring at the headlight units already included the wire to hook up to the European style fog lights located in the lower part of the cluster.

I'd like to mount vintage fog lamps in the holes from my overriders; is there a method to hook them up so that they illuminate by pulling on the light switch?

My discussion topic was the optional Bosch fog lamps mounted on the front bumper like the Gold 230SL at the Mercedes-Benz museum. I now that my early USA light unites have a fog light below the headlight unite. There is an extra pull out and turn on the light switch that will activate the bumper fog or driving lights.
this option was sometimes dealer installed and is the same Bosch lamp as the 108 sedans had for Europe.
I am wanting to know if anyone has this option and nows where to fine the wiring digram for them.
