Title: 250 sl wiper blades
Post by: billhon on April 22, 2014, 02:12:01
Replacement filler blades are Only $ 76.00 each through Mercedes!!!  After market replacements seem to be black which is not original silver. Any ideas?

This should be what you're looking for, at a reasonable price. I bought a set and am happy with them.

I agree that the supplier Rubirossa is an excellent source. I bought a few things from him in the past, and it was without any problem. The wipers he sells do the job, but they are a bit larger, which gives them a look that is somewhat less slender like the Bosch ones

Just replace the rubber inserts. Years ago you could just order the rubber from Bosch.

Yes, just replacing the rubber inserts is the way to go but I see lots of cars that have black wipers and the owners don't realise that they should be silver. It's one of my cheap tricks to impress them!

Stick,
same here... seeing things like black vipers on Pagodas make me think that a little gesture would make a great change, but then same goes for cap fillers, antennas, and radios.

I discovered while cleaning my windshield, that my early 250 SL wiper blades were shot and I set about to replace them.  $75/each for a refill from Bud's Benz?!?  Well, that wasn't about to happen.  I checked some previous threads here (couldn't post on the more relevant one, no reply button) and saw that the 47-600 refill from Trico was recommended.  That's 6mm wide.  My arms and Bosch blades (what holds the refill) are original.  The claw has an interior width of 9.5 mm, no way a 6mm refill was going to work, as were all the wipers I saw at auto stores (would just pull the refill out), too narrow.  Through online research, I found that Trico makes a 47-800, an 8mm refill.  I could find no larger.  So, I found the one local store here that had them in stock, $8.99 for the pair, I don't know 26" long?  They have the snap off steel inserts.  Picked up the pair and checked the fit.  Obviously, it was narrower than my claw, but that was easily remedied by slightly squeezing the claws to match the refill.  Then, cut (not snapped - snaps too long) the steel inserts to size (a touch longer than the stock ones because of play in the retaining clip of the new steel inserts), cut the rubber refill and slide into the blade.  Perfect!  Original blade, new refills.  Only clue, the refill retaining mechanism on the steel stiffeners rather than an indentation in the refill rubber for the claw.  For $141 difference for a maintenance part, that's fine with me.  Added bonus, the refills are so long, I only had to use one for the two 12" blades.  I have an extra set ready to go, 4 refills for $9!  Take that Bud's and Mercedes.

Hi John,

I recently went through a very similar exercise, but for 280SL Bosch wiper blades. Everything you say holds for those, except for the Trico part number. For those blades, the Trico 47-700 are the right fit. This model is for 7 mm trapezoidal claws. I have some pictures below. I went through the same steps as you to cut them to size.

your claws must be narrower than mine.  You have a 280 SL and I have an early 250 SL.

Bend them in a little bit.

Bend them in a little bit.

I did, see my post above (4 posts), I used the 8mm width (widest I could find), not the 7mm width the 280 SL poster mentions.  The point I was making is that earlier 113s may have wider wiper blade claws.

John, I think you're right, and I think another difference is the claws on the earlier blades need a square section refill (Trico 47-600 and 47-800 are both square); but the later blades need a trapezoidal section refill (47-700 is trapezoidal).
