Title: Heater core coolant supply pipe
Post by: wwheeler on March 13, 2014, 19:49:42
I am considering replacing my coolant pipe on my '68 280SE W111. Last time I checked, Mercedes is NLA. Anybody have another source for a NOS one?

I have checked into getting one custom bent but radiator shops won't touch it. There are some tube benders that will but have a high overhead for just one. Since they are made of steel and are NLA, I would assume more people than me will need one.

Just a quick poll to see how many we are talking about, who might be interested???

I don't know what the part for your car looks like so this is a shot in the dark.... but if it is as simple as bending tube see you can get some stainless tubing (marine application maybe) make friends with your local high school shop teacher and see if they bend you one.  Alternatively make your own by getting some stainless tube, fill it full of sandblasting sand, weld on the ends and bend it yourself.  In my part of the world plumbers have tube benders and you may be able to rent a tube bender from a local rental supply.   Do you have a techshop franchise around you?  Maybe starty hanging about machine shops to see if they have a bender.

You could always get some metal tubing and cut and weld together in sections like when they make headers but that is alot of work compared to a

I got mine made up from stainless pipe. Cost about 80US from memory for a one off.  Highly recommend as this pipe, if its the one I am thinking off, is hard to get at and is often found in a rust pitted state.

Andy,

Do you know who made your coolant pipe? I am having a really hard time finding someone who can/will do this. Radiator shops won't touch it and fuel line benders don't have the larger size.

Thanks,

I can't speak for others but wouldn't a plumber also have the skills for this if you supplied the material? They are experts at bending, joining, soldering and attaching pipes like this to be watertight.
