Rick asked a question earlier today....I may well be asking for help from UK members on organising the event in 2014.
Those who attended the event LAST year will remember Peter suggested we should do a UK event around one of the big UK motoring events. There are a few to choose from - Silverstone Classic, Goodwood Revival, Cholmondley Pageant, CarFest and so on but ONE of these was specifically mentioned by our esteemed leader...
I came home and started to do some homework and today things became clearer. We have the opportunity to start the 2014 European Event at the start of the...
GOODWOOD REVIVAL
http://www.goodwood.co.uk/revival/welcome.aspx
It is usually in mid-September. 146,000 people attended last year over the three days. Testing is Friday and racing on Saturday/Sunday. Getting INTO and OUT of Goodwood is not easy.
We have the opportunity to stay ON SITE on the Thursday night (we would be parked securely and safely), have drinks and dinner and then spend the day at Revival - including Paddock access tickets - and leave late in the day to head to another location for the remainder of our weekend. We would park and stay at the pop-up hotel on site - it's not camping but is based on two people sharing a room. Today I had confirmation that we can take the rooms JUST for the Thursday night - Snoozebox usually only do full weekend tickets - and a rough indication of the cost of that (£110 per room B&B). Other things, like dinner, lunch, drink, actual Goodood tickets and so on are all still tbc.
As we'd be starting earlier than usual, it would make sense to finish the formal event on Sunday morning so folk can get home for the Monday morning...
This will not be cheap - assume ~£250 JUST for the Goodwood portion of the Event. So it's NOT CHEAP - they are in a sellers market when it comes to pricing! Hopefully we can bring that cost down but if I price the rooms, entry, food etc from the info from this year, that's sort of where we'd be coming out just for the night/day.
However, I need people to express their interest in doing this, and logically therefore building the 2014 event, around/following the Goodwood Revival. I am not looking for a commitment and we know from past experience that we will lose people between now and payment time. If you're interested in building the 2014 event around Goodwood Revival accommodation, then please post here. I need to get numbers to the people doing the organising (and will likely pay a very early deposit on YOUR behalf for the rooms if we get a decent number of people interested). I have a hunch we could take 30 rooms but that is all up to you guys. Rooms for the Thursday night are shared so if that's likely to be an issue, speak now or PM me if you prefer.
If this is not for you, or you think it's a bad idea/too expensive then that would also be good to know and the UK members can put their heads together to come up with an alternate plan as the onus does appear to be on us!
I appreciate that this is sort of putting the cart before the horse but:
- our past events have generally coincided with the Goodwood timing
- southern England is generally easier for European members to get to than more beautiful/emptier parts of the UK such as the Lakes or Wales
- to me there is a great advantage in staying on site: we get more of the day at the Revival, with fewer (hah!) people and don't run the risk of spending half the day sitting in traffic getting to the circuit or spread to the four corners of southern England!
- it's a fantastic event but...
- as it's expensive, it makes some sense to gauge interest before going too far with the organising
Therefore if there is interest, as well as trying to pull details together, a crack team of UK members will help me work out the rest of the weekend. Won't you? ;D
-
Oh my yes, Goodwood is on my bucket list. Really won't be able to assist from the States, but at this point, most definitely interested.
-
Me, myself, and I (and Karin, if pushed and enough previous attendees attend) would LOVE the event. So count us in!
Peter
(ps: we'll share a room)
-
Peter,
will you share the room, because you want you want to act as Scotsmen or because you want to act as Englishmen? ;D
-
Ohyouguyyys!
-
needless to say ......we're in !
-
Hello,
I've got my Pagoda for the third year now but haven't been to any event so far. So, please count me in!
Regards
Fritz
-
Peter,
will you share the room, because you want you want to act as Scotsmen or because you want to act as Englishmen? ;D
No, because Karin is my wife, and I'll have to!
And, Flyair... you'll be there too?
-
Ohyouguyyys!
Dennis.... will you be there or are you just jealous?
-
Peter,
you are so conventional; ;D I was expecting some adventurous Pagoda Group socializing… and I got it all wrong…. My Bad. Regards to Ms Karin :)
As for a UK event, I will do my best but rather without car…
-
Finally, Goodwood! Is marked on my "still to do" list for years. Count us in.
-
James, this is very interesting. Please count me in.
Martijn

If I can get away from work, I'm in!

I can feel a convoy from the Netherlands/Belgium coming up via the Chunnel...
-
feel it too .....hope we don't build up the pressure james :) .................. i fear you can't back down anymore. ;)
-
BTW Porsche ( 50 Year 911 ) is high-lighted at Goodwood this year .....i know 2 guys who are thrilled by that :)
-
shtt hush Rick, don't tell them we both bought an aircooled flat six...it makes noise, it smokes, it pulls.
-
I know , but Goodwood really sounds good , as a matter of fact will try to be there with or without a 2014 event .
-
Hello James,
Goodwood Revival: that’s classic motorists heaven. A great initiative! Won’t miss it.
I’ ll be joining the convoy from the Netherlands/Belgium.
I have no clue about my co-driver. My wife has to teach on Thursday and Friday and Bert is working/living in Asia now. However, that seat won’t stay empty.
Greetings,
Erik
-
Any more? NONE from the UK? Shame on you! Or are you just reluctant to put your heads over the parapet in case you get roped in to helping organise?
So far we appear to have...
Rick
Moss Andrews
Peter van Es
Pablo02
Martijn
Brian
Hans (pm'd me)
SilverSL
Griffin
I thought we'd have more interest than this - although the weekday and cost is clearly a factor
-
And the fact that people can't commit to an event over a year away.... so don't despair...
Peter

James,
Oh, the irony of it all...a UK event, and I'm based in Germany and probably can't make it.
I would love to help you and have never been to the Revival, but I fear that the best chance of me seeing a 113 in Summer 14 is by signing up for the Helmand District pagoda group of the Afghanistan MB Owners Club. Even then the cars may be pretty thin on the ground. (Oddly, I've never seen one over there, not even in Kabul. Maybe it's because they don't up-armour so well?)
I just wanted to let you know that I'm not afraid to stick my head above the parapet. At least not when it comes to the UK event. If we're talking Helmand, it may still be best to keep one's head below the parapet unless wearing a helmet.
(I can recommend routes in Cornwall...)
-
We are up for it James, just concentrating on getting this year sorted at the mo' :)

Surely you could ask the taleban for the weekend off? ;D
-
James next year seems soooooo far away but as long as health and a healthy car can get us to Goodwood, we'll be there!, good effort so far keep up the good work!
Neil

James,
Count me in!
Kay

That's settled then.
Let's go! :D
Erik

Hey James, sorry have only just spotted this.
Please put me on the list.

Hey James, sorry have only just spotted this.
Please put me on the list.
Up early or late to bed?!!
-
both, in the US at the moment.
:)
-
I've been to the Festival of Speed many times but never made it to the Revival. Perfect way to start - I'm up for it
-
James,
Count on me and at least one of my daughters (probably Mary Catherine again) or my wife to attend. I still have a pagoda floating around somewhere in Europe that needs to wind its way back west and Goodwood would be a great stop!
Hope you and Tamara are well!
Best,
Tom
-
Hello James,
Please count me in as well.
Thanks a lot. ;)
Achim
-
Count me in. It will make a change to use the Pagoda in the UK rather than all these empty mountain roads here in Spain.
-
Hoh no, it looks as if Goodwood - I would like to visite once - in mid-September 2014 collides with the yearly national heritage weekend in Holland. During that weekend our home, a 17th century town hall, is normally open to the public. So I am not yet sure we can count in. Sorry.
Gerard and Petra
-
Very sorry, Peter - - Yes, I am jealous, because no, I'm not able to make it for so many reasons. Alas, alack and woe. Really brilliant concept though; I think the GR might be my very best yearning, the image of Sophia Loren having faded a bit. I shall wave my cap in the air for you lucky few; make the most of it.
-
You guys are in for a real treat. So envious. I went to Goodward in 1999 and will never never forget the spectacle. Simply amazing being able to get up and close with some of the most famous and valuable pieces of machinery imaginable.
Don't know if it is still the same but none of the cars were roped and you could wander the pits and rub shoulders with quite a few of the legends of motor sport. I remember turning around and coming face to face with Sterling Moss and Nigel Mansell.
I had just purchased my first ever digital camera and went crazy. Fantastic memories.
In particular the silver arrows blew me away. Have uploaded a few pics of a few mercs at this meet.
Wish I weren't on the opposite side of the world. Hope you all have a blast.
-
Hi James, Lynda and I will attend as the car has to come back to the UK next year. Having done FoS this year Revival is a must.
Rob and
-
OK.... Someone from the UK needs to step up and help organise! I have a rough idea of what might work but...
AND
an update.... the on site "pop-up" hotel is now saying that the rooms will be about double the price they originally gave me, so I am looking at an alternative that would involve us driving in (early) Friday morning and out that evening. I figure that £200 for a room for the night, exclding tickets etc is a little steep. The "market will bear it" - ie, they will sell them at that price but I think it's likely a little rich for us, making the weekend very pricey!
In the autumn I shall start work with the organisers (Goodwood) and see what can be done as an alternative.
Thanks for the expressions of interest
-
I will be attending the Revival on the Saturday, and will be parked in the pre 73 car park. I will be there along with friends in their black W111 convertible and a Mk2 Jag. We normally get pretty way laid in the car park itself as there is so much to see and there is nothing like a good car park picnic when the weather is good.
I am sorry that I won't be able to help with any logistics, but with my own experience when arriving at Goodwood, its best to arrive in convoy as you get told where to park so trying to set up a general parking assembly is pretty difficult.
My car is silver / black and reg is 828 HP if your passing.
Peter
-
Definitely interested in attending so please add our names, (Iain & Bebe), to the list.
Thanks.
-
I just realised that I am a year out.
I will be there this year and hopefully in 2014 too.
Peter
-
Hi All
Im going this year too, on Sat and Sun. Although I couldn't commit the date a while back, I finally managed to get the tickets! Its a SOLD OUT event now! Anyway, I will park in the Classic Car Park arena, so if there is a place to meet or park our cars together that would be great! Looking forward to it and hopefully the weather will keep. Last year was brilliant!
-
We could all gather here in Oostduinkerke, 5 minutes from the French Border and about 40 minutes from Calais. The neighborhood here is used to see my 250 SL driving by almost daily actually, that would be awesome to have a convoy of Pagoda's. Doing that we might consider to drive to cape blanc Nez , wonderful drive along the ocean up and down curvy roads....thats my favorite drive.
-
Hi from Merano Italy,
two new members wants to join the 2014 Event in Goodwood.
So count three Pagodas from Italy. (Peter, Johannes)
I drive two cars at the same time....
So let us have more information about the event.
Is it already fixed?
Thanks
Peter
-
Nothing can be fixed until we have had conversations with Goodwood and they won't let us start those until this year's Revival is out of the way - so end of next week at the earliest to START conversations with them
Hold yer horses!
-
I'm in (we will be in two) from UK!
-
I have also just seen this and would be interested in joining if its still happening.
-
I will be in the UK and Germany in September traveling by train (I did the train using the RailPass in 2011 and it was great). I will be joining 20 Pagoda's in Hamburg, Germany on September 4, 5 and 6th. My plans are to make it a 3 week holiday visiting family apart from the Hamburg meet. Two of the Pagode drivers in Germany will have no passenger and I am invited to drive with one of them during the Hamburg meet since of course I cannot take my Pagoda along. :)
I will be in London, UK and am thinking of scheduling my holiday in such a way to take in at least one of the 3 days at the Goodwood Revival. I'm wondering what would be the best of those three days to attend.
I notice that that Erik might not have a co-driver (passenger), unless he intents to take part in the racing events? I would be happy to meet him (provided he does need a co-driver) in Brussels or any train station along his route. I assume the caravan would be taking the EuroStar to London, UK.
I will be flying in from Canada into London, UK scheduling my holiday around the Hamburg meet and the Goodwood Revival event would be no problem for me. In any event I like to attend one of the days I would be making my own way from London, UK to the event (should there be no offers as a passenger), and return to London, UK since I do have family in London, UK before returning home to Canada.
Should anyone from France, Italy or Germany drive to the event (and is in need of a co-driver that would of course share with the petrol) my 3 week train travels include stops in Paris, Zurich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Berlin and Hamburg of course.
Edit ... "Goodwood" typo
-
Rolf it is the 'Goodwood' revival.
Just in case you want to 'google' it

Thanks Larry & Norma for spotting my typo ... I corrected it :)
Thanks again!

Rolf
If you want to get Goodwood Revival tickets, we'll be there on the Friday (12th Sept)... so the best day may be the Saturday or Sunday ;D. I am sure that between us we can get you around... A couple of us will not be in Pagodas for whatever reason (Garry has wimped out from shipping his car over from Oz, for example!). I do need to know if you need room and board though! PM me
James
-
Aww come-on James, I had hoped to have my car there but when I learnt that US was not having a PUB this year, my plan of shipping it to LA, driving to Ohio and then on to NY and shipping it to Southampton fell over. I have put it back on my bucket list for one year in the future when both US and Euro are having a gig. Interestingly enough I did cost it and the cost of doing it is not much more than a business class ticket. (Maybe I need to leave Kate home and bring Bella the Pagoda instead.

Thanks James,
I need only a entry ticket to the grounds one day will be all I need as long as I have a chance to see all them fine Pagoda's/Pagode's and meet some of you fine folks :)
I will be travelling from London, UK to the site and back in the evening to London (by rented car). I will be staying with family members in London, UK. I read somewhere here or in the other thread that you all be driving in together was this on the Thursday night and you be on the grounds all day Friday? Perhaps you can confirm that. I will then build my three week trip around my Hamburg and London, UK visit.
Thanks again and thanks for organizing all this! (http://www.m3post.com/forums/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)

We will be arriving en masse (assuming we don't get lost!) from the Chichester side and likely pretty early in the day (before 8.30am). Goodwood has Pre-73 parking which I always think is as much fun as the event itself. Arriving en masse means we can park in the Pre-73 area together. We can park there anyway, but you might be parked next to something other than a Pagoda :P
If you are coming from London, leave early if you are on the A3 (main and signed route and thus very busy) or get a Sat Nav and come down the A24 and via Petworth if arriving later. Jay bought Friday Revival entry/grandstand etc tickets yesterday
-
Cannot wait... My only day of car events this year... Me and my boy are looking forward to this one!
