Title: 62 MBZ 220se coupe fuel injection pump installation
Post by: thecarappraiser on March 09, 2013, 00:51:55
Hi guys, i recently bought a 62 220se coupe 4 speed with factory sunroof and a/c. The old girl has been sat in a garage since 1975. The fuel injection unit is no good, but i picked up a used engine and trans complete with a supposedly good fuel injection unit.

Question is how do i set up the pump for installation, the pump turns 4 times for a complete turn. I have the engine timing set at TDC and i want to try and install the other fuel injection pump. Its the 2 plunger pump not the 6 plunger like on my 230SL. Any ideas ?

thanks
neil

Align the timing mark on the inj. pump ( missing spline with the mark on the plate near the splined shaft ) then engine at TDC either firing 1 or 6 and install the pump
The pump supplies fuel to 3 cylinders at a time so it doesn't matter if it is firing 1 or 6 when installing inj. pump.

You were lucky to get it running that easily. That FI system is one of the most difficult to get working properly.

yes it was more luck than judgement! but i will take luck everyday of the week. I will get the rest of the mechanicals running as they should, see how she drives then start a bit of restoration with new seat covers and carpet for starters, and maybe back to the original white colour with a navy blue, or dark metallic grey roof color. Has to be pretty rare with a 4 speed, sunroof and ac.

Four speed and sun roof are not that rare - I had one back in the 80's and a 250SE with the same set up 10 years later. Both were euro cars.

I would do paint first but maybe your interior needs that work now.
