Title: 1968 Automatic transmission noise
Post by: lpatricio on November 03, 2012, 21:41:26
On my 1968 280SE Coupe i am getting a strange metalic grinding noise, only when going from reverse to park. If i go straight from drive to park no noise.
When i go from park to reverse no noise either.
Has anyone had this before. Oil level is correct, throtle linkages checked,  double acting solenoide also checked and no faults found.
Any suggestions?

Is your idle speed correct? Should be about 700-750 RPM.

thanks for your feedback,

I have tried several idle speeds and the noise is still there when i go from REVERSE to PARK. At the moment i have the idle @ 800rpm.

I am no transsmission expert but have you tried to adjust the shift linkage? Maybe there is a worn bushing in the linkage. My '68 has an unusual socket connector from the shifter rod to bell crank that is connected to the trans shifter linkage. Maybe it is worn? It looks like a small shock absorber and I figure it keeps the shifter lever on the column from bouncing up and down during driving. See picture. It is on the left.

Hi Wheeler,

My car does not have the part you mention,  must be different,  mine is a coupe and has a floor shift.

Yes a floor shift would not have the neutral switch in that location. That is for column shift only. But it must have one somewhere so it might be worth finding it and checking it out.
