Title: Mercedes battery part no
Post by: Drewtee on October 30, 2012, 11:36:27
Hi All,

I need to replace my battery with a Merc battery.

I rang Jacksons in the UK and they gave me the part number 000982300826 but the dimensions are too small L23.8 h 16.4 w 16.6. The battery needs to be more like 30 cm in length.

Can anyone confirm the part number for the correct battery

Its a 1971 280se. The picture below is NOT my car but the battery seems to fit nicely.

I recently had my battery replaced by the Mercedes dealer. The MB part number is: A 000 982 31 08. Below that are a series of other numbers: 12 V 74 Ah 680 A (EN). This was slightly larger than the previous battery but fit just fine. I hope that helps.

I bought a battery from my MB dealer and this is the number they used:
# 002 541 99 01 26

It fit perfectly for my '68 W111. I don't have the factory top frame installed, but it fit as well.

Thanks Wallace and '17beige280sl', -One of those will do the job- I think i will try the battery Wallace has first of all as i slightly prefer the look (can't believe i'm comparing the aesthetics of two batteries!

The 3.5 had the battery in a different location and may not be the same size. I will measure mine tonight and see what it is. I removed the two pull straps on the side because they just looked cluttered to me.

Well, there is a small issue here, your MB dealer provides you with white batteries these days, but when these cars were new the batteries where black, and
they where delivered from Bosch. http://www.bannerbatterien.com/banner/home/index_en.php (http://www.bannerbatterien.com/banner/home/index_en.php) deliver batteries with the right measurements and
if you tear off the Banner stickers and replace them with a Bosch sticker, witch you will find on ebay i would suppose you are up to the "originalgefühl"..
With the Banner battery mounted you will also be able to use the original mounting top frame. The 3.5 has the battery mounted on the other side of the
engine bay, and it is also bigger than the one for the straight six cars. But also the correct 3.5 battery can be delivered from Banner..

Here is the engine bay of my 280SE/Ca with this battery mounted:

Very true about the current white batteries. In the US for MB concours judging the white battery is considered as acceptable, with no impact on scoring. There are some places in the States that do reproduction batteries as Jan mention for Europe. One such place is Antique Auto Batteries in Hudson Ohio -  from their web site - "We offer Correct, Maintenance Free - "No Judge Will Know" Batteries " I never tried to source a Pagoda battery from them, is use the current white MB Varta battery.
