Title: Calling all W11X owners
Post by: wwheeler on January 04, 2011, 04:46:44
Now that there is a section specifically for these cars here, I thought it would be great to start a registry of sorts and see how many people own these cars on this site. Post a picture of your W11X car if you have one and what you like the most about your car.

Attached is a picture of my '68 W111 coupe with Dark Olive green paint and cognac leather interior. Hard thing to narrow down what one thing I like the best. I guess it would surprisingly be the glove box. Normally, this feature is treated as an after thought. My 111's is leather lined and the glove box door is solid wood (veneered on BOTH sides with burled walnut) with a chrome bar as the handle. WOW! It is as nice as the rest of the interior. The earlier cars had even more incredible features such as wood veneered gauge pods and solid chromed seat hinges. Cars will never be made like that again.

I sold this 1961 220Sb in 2009 since I bought my 230 SL.  I had the car since 1987.  I miss it.  It needed the most work to complete.

This is my 71 250C (W114) in light ivory which I purchased last year.  I had intended to use it as a daily driver but it was in such great shape I am reluctant to drive it in the snow or rain.  While my 230SL came with virtually no options, I like that this one came with a lot of them, electric windows and sunroof, heated rear window, tinted windows, air, auto, and PS.  The interior is still original as the PO covered the seats with sheep skin.  It had a Blaupunk radio which was removed and replaced in the past some time.  The PO doesn't remember which one it was so if anyone knows what radio would have been installed in 71 please let me know.  Thanks

Hello Jordan,

See what the datacard says :o if there was a Becker Europa (very common) or something else. Have a look in our Wiki  for the explanation of the codes.
If your car "came" with a Blaupunkt radio there will be the option code marked off that only the "interference suppression kit (less radio)", option codes 53/3 - 53/6, was ordered - very common, at least in Europe.
Becker units were just too expensive and Blaupunkt radios were only about a third of the price of the cheapest Becker.
As you certainly know, only Beckers were factory installed, all others (Blaupunkt, Telefunken, Grundig) were dealer installed on special request of the new owner.

The most common period Blaupunkt radios were Blaupunkt Köln (Cologne) with automatic station seeker, Blaupunkt Frankfurt (only push buttons, Blaupunkt's equivalent to the Becker Europa) ... and other cheaper units.
At the beginning of the 70ies there were no Blaupunkt tape player radios and no Stereo units. Don't know for sure when they started to sell those... and probably hard(er) to come by today.
If I were you ... swap in a good Becker (Europa) and fine.  ;)

Quote
While my 230SL came with virtually no options,
:o
No problem at all; you can all retrofit these: tinted glass, power steering, Becker Grand Prix, seat belts, etc. :D
Not cheap but possible. ;)

Good luck & best,

Achim

Here is my W116 - 1980 300SD.  Was not shopping for one, but came across this "time capsule" quite by accident.  I was doing some other business with the 88 year old original owner about 4 months ago and mentioned that the '91 Honda Accord he was driving looked like a showroom car. (I used to have one just like it) We started talking cars and he mentioned that his wife is now blind, he had 3 cars and needed to sell one - the 1980.  I looked, and was stunned.  It is fabulous.  It had 169k on the clock, though I have put about 7K on it since the purchase. The original paint is fabulous, and EVERYTHING is original, including the spare (never touched the ground), the first aid kit etc. Everything works great (including the air) with the exception of an erratic Cruise Control, which is a future project. (I fixed an inoperable tach with a piece of packing popcorn foam based on a post from the Benzworld forum) I know these cars are not the most collectible, but boy does it ever run and drive great.  AND they are only original ONCE.  I love it.

I do need to take some better pictures, this one was when I first saw the car.

Those cars are unfortunately under-appreciated.  I had a 450SEL and feel that the W116 chassis is one of the most elegant around especially with the euro bumpers.

my favorite part about the 220sb is (A.) the speedometer  and (B.) how good it handles for such a massive car.  oh and cant forget that luxiourious interior
least favorite part.....setting up a freshly rebuilt set of zeniths 35/40's >:(

The leather is a dark brown and is mostly original except for the bolsters that were replaced. The white steering wheel was a factory option as well as the white Hella driving lights, power sunroof  and heated rear window. It now has the European lights but was delivered with 4 over and under headlights in Halogens for Europe.
It is a German version so no A/C or PW. It was delivered to Wurtzburg in Germany and it was brought back from the Canadian air force base in Baden Baden where I acquired the car in 1989. I had it restored in Montreal and changed the colour from Whiskey metallic to a MB cream with a chocolate top.

Hans: Your front bumpers on the W111 are interesting. I have the rubber strips on the rear but the car was hit in Germany and the front bumpers were replaced by W108 bumpers with rubber strips but the strips go around the front bumper at the end as opposed to be tucked into the slot as you see on the  280 Se 3.5 coupes and cabriolets.

I have seen 1969's built in 1968 that only have chrome bumpers front and back with no rubber strips. Do you have rubber strips on the rear bumpers? I bought a used front bumper to replace the W108 but am looking for rubber strips for the front.
I used to work in Spain in the late 60's Built El Capistrano on the Costa Del Sol. It is still there www.elcapistrano.com . Have not been back since 1979. Your car is a beauty.

Doug,

The original all-chrome front (and rear) bumpers are the same on all high grille w111 and w112 .
The low-grille bumpers all had the rubber strips, but are different from the w108 style bumpers.
I think it was around june in 1969 they introduced the low grille cars, and with that the bumpers with rubberstrip.
As a cheaper substitue the w108 bumpers was often used as replacements for the very expensive all-chrome w111/w112 bumpers.

That is a fantastic looking 111 Hans!

Just out of curiosity, what made the all chrome bumpers more expensive than the 108 rubber strip bumpers?
Title: Re: Calling all W11X owners
Post by: hkollan on January 22, 2011, 00:14:01
My assumption is that W111.02x bumpers where more expensive due to the significantly lower production numbers of the w111 cars and therefore higher production costs.  The fact that w108 bumpers where(and are) relatively easy to come by made many owners take the easy way out and switch to a w108 bumper when a replacement was needed.  Last I checked the original chrome bumpers where NLA but there are various reproductions available or will be soon.

Hans: My 1969 280SE high grille coupe has the later 280.SE 3.5 rear bumper with the rubber strip that inserts into the end of the bumper. The rear end was never in an accident but the front bumper has the W108 bumper and I know the car was in a front end accident. My coupe is a German car built on May 16th 1969 according to the letter from Stuttgart. I bought a used bumper for 3.5 coupe and I was told that it would fit the older cars. I need to get the bumper re chromed which is going to be expensive.
Very mysterious

Doug,

Only the all-chrome bumpers would be correct for your car, that goes for both font and rear.
Accident or not, at some stage the rear bumper was replaced on your car assuming its a factory high grille coupe.
Quite often these cars where modified, but usually a high grille car was converted to the lowgrille version, and not the other way around.
The low grille bumpers will fit your car, it just would not be original for a HG-car.

Jan,

Thanks for sending in your picture. Your car IS beautiful. I really love the picture of the illuminated Euro headlight. I have always thought the 111s are best w/o the bullet turn signals, the US side markers and the chunky twin license plate lights. Your's looks very clean and much like a sculpture. The US add-ons detract from that.

I noticed the grille on Jan's car is the same as mine. They both have the larger openings in the grille. Most of the 111 grilles I see have the smaller opening. Did the early ones use the smaller opening?

Tom at the Classic Center had told me at one time that my grille was very rare.

Does anybody know when the different grilles were used?

I have attached a more current picture showing the grille and the new WW tires.

Hi you guys, thank`s for all the nice comments on my car..
And about the larger openings in the grille: These grilles where only
delivered on 280 cars. And they went out of production on an early
stage, so if you needed a new grille mask for some reason DB only had
the 220/250 grille with the smaller openings to offer.
So yes, these grilles are very rare..

I wonder why the switched if it was only for the '68 and 1/2 of the 69 model? I believe in late '69, the went to the low grille. Was that change to the low grille world wide or just in the US?

As a general rule, MB was trying to find ways to lower the costs starting with '68 model. The larger openings in the mask would have less metal and maybe easier to manufacture. Who knows?
Title: Re: Calling all W11X owners
Post by: heckflosse on April 29, 2011, 21:02:35
I suppose i was a way to spot the visual difference from the 220/250. The grille and hubcaps are the only outside difference between these models.
These grilles does contain more metal than the older ones, due to the thickness of the latter. So no lower costs for MB there.
The flachkühler (low grille) where a wolrdwide change introduced in late 1969.

I took my 69 280 SE coupe to the Concours of America show at the Inn at St John's in Livonia Michigan last week. I was invited to display it along with some very expensive Mercedes. Mike Salemi and I had the youngest cars there and although we did not win anything it was an honour to be invited.

Although I had replaced the starter before leaving the car would not start after leaving US customs at the Canada US border. Only when the car cooled down would it start. After getting back to Toronto. it appeared that there was a short in the wiring on the neutral safety switch wires which caused the problem. Other than that the car ran very well despite the 35 degree temperature especially at the Port Huron bridge.
On Tuesday I flying to Pebble Beach for the show although I don't expect to see many W111's there. This will complete my "bucket list" of being at the big three car shows including Amelia Island which so far is my favourite.  :)

Here is my 1970 280SE 3.5 with an exact Maisto 1:18 repliica.
I had bought this car from an elder guy less than 2 years ago.
The car runs fine with some minor problem that I will take care of once I have the work on my 1967 250SL done.
The weather is getting to be nicer in Kuwait so I will get to enjoy my car for the winter season.
I will post photos of my Pagoda once I get it back

Hello Louis

No I did not install the headrests, I actually bought the car about two years ago like this. I know the side view mirrors are not the original ones, but I like them.
as for the head rests, i thought all 3.5 models came with them installed, or may be they were an option requested by the dealer.
my small 280SE sitting on the hood does not have the back headrests, but then it is only a 280SE not the 3.5 ( ;D ;D).
It is actually an automatic floor shift
anyhow I like both.
as well as my 1967 250SL which I still did not get a chance to drive yet, but hopefully soon.

Thanks a lot Louis

These are 15 inch ATS bundt with polished rim, i think they suit the low grille cars very well..
The euro headlamps are original on all euro cars, but the stacked headlights where available as an factory option, and many (most) owners of euro cars have changed to the stacked type along the way.
In my opinion the euro lamps looks a lot better, and i think it`s cool that they have become a rare sight so they will remain on this car forever..

I wish I had my notes in front of me but one of the W111/112 coupes, presumably either the 300se or the 280se 3.5, came from the factory with stacked headlamps even in Europe. This was to differentiate it from the previous "lowly" models. Anyone have the details?

Jan  is correct, in Europe only the w109 top model 300 SEL 6.3 came from the factory  with the stacked halogen lights. Part of this halogen headlamp setup were the H1 foglights.

Thank you, you are correct. I remembered it being an "up-powered" model, but being so deep in the Coupe world I got confused apparently. I wanted to reply to avoid any confusion in the future for anyone who may read my previous post.

While searching the Daimler Media Archive I came across this photo and liked the composition.
Wish I had one of them.  ;)
