Post by: xcashewx on August 28, 2010, 04:48:19
i happened to see this sitting on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere for sale at $2000. i couldnt help but buy it. haggled the guy down to $1400
all original car. and an az/california car its whole life.
pros:
64,000 original miles
dealer serviced
no rust. except trunk floor.
straight body with few dings
complete chrome and interior
cons:
needs paint. (free at my tech school  ;D)
dash wood and dash need repair

i think i got one hell of a deal on this one.

What you have there is a 220Sb - looks like a Euro model so it's likely a 4 speed and maybe on the floor. Pretty clean looking car. A local guy just sold a 1962 220b with 30,000 miles on it for around 10K so I suppose you did OK on this car.
His was like a new car though and everything had been rebuilt.

Congratulations Cashew.
That looks like the makings of a very nice ride, there was an interesting article in a recent MBCUSA Star Mag about a 16/17 year old who renovated a 220SB and converted it to a 300E motor.
Dan check out the photos again, it's a column shift

I'm still on dial up so I kind of skip over pictures sometimes.

I'm working on a 300SE of about the same vintage. Very rare car with RHD. The 189 is  quite a powerfull engine but rater difficult to work on. Parts are VERY expensive......

would it be wise to switch out the old massive york compressor with a smaller rotary sanden? because the a/c will be used quite a bit.

im currently refinishing all the dash wood pieces, and redoing the brakes and front suspension. it should be on the road soon  8)
pictures are on the way

These old York compressors are rebuildable, but they tend so sap quite a lot of power from the engine (especially carburettor engines).
It is generally accepted that the more modern Sanden rotary compressors are more efficient than the old York compressors, therefore it would not be an unwise consideration if you intend using it often.

The mounting hardware for the Sanden will be different though.

Finnies are lovely cars. Here in South Africa they have become the rage amongst enthusiasts.
There are still many around here as they were assembled in the East London plant in the 60's after being brought from the Fatherland as KDK's (knock down kits).

I know uploading pictures here is considered a pain by most people, but this thread shows why we recommend it.... the provider where you host them may pull them at anytime, whereas we will not!

! ! ! Very Nice Find ! ! !
good luck
I always wondered how a 1990 300e motor would work in one of these.......
