Title: Fresh Air Flap Colour
Post by: DavidBrough on July 05, 2010, 17:29:44
Does anyone know what colour the fresh air flap should be that goes under the air scoop in front of the windscreen. Mine has been painted body colour (silver grey) but it looks like it should perhaps be matt black or silver.

The fresh air flap on ours is body color.  Been repainted once, but the under side is the original paint.

Cheers,

Definitely body color.

Even on very early and not so early 230ies.

Ok, my cowl is a mess. It's body colour but has layers of paint, some solid, some less so, sort of patched all over it

So I've taken it out and will flat it and prime it. I have a new seal for the reinstallation

What I don't have, and would love, us a means of painting it. I am sure a "rattle can" would do the trick and even someone of my limited abilities should be able to get a better finish than the one I have. So... Where might I get a rattle can of db906?

Thanks

Hi,

Different vendors on ebay offer spray cans with any met edes color of choice.
Here is one sample from ebay.de

Expect color differences to your existing paint, might not be critical for the fresh air flap though.

Regards,

Hans

Thanks for the suggestions - I found there's a few companies that make up rattle cans and bought one, and some lacquer, primer and various degrees of wet and dry. That's on it's way so I spent an hour last night with a wire brush on the drill, a file and some sandpaper

I now have bare metal. Like an idiot, I didn't take photos of the start point but when I took the file to the flap, I ended up using an edge and in so doing lifted various layers of flaky paint and some primer in chunks. However, bare, it's far smoother than it was and assuming I can get the prep right and handle a spray can...

You do of course realise that this job is displacement activity: my heater levers need replacing...

James, since you already have your air cowl apart and are planning to do your heater levers, now would be a good time to do so. You will be able to access and remove the cables from the firewall and heater core flaps to clean and lubricate them. It also makes it a little easier getting the lever unit back in and adjusted.

I remembered...

I did take a photo of what I started with so I could make sure I got the seal back on the right way!

Will put it back together over the weekend but stripped it, etch primed it, flatted/primed/flatted/primed/flatted, 3 coats of paint and a flat with more 1200 grade wet and dry, 2 more of paint. 3 coats of lacquer... I think it looks a bit better...

And yes... I am hoping it's the light rather than the fact that the DB906 from the can is darker than that on the car...

When can I expect your application?
