Title: Lateral movement in door windows
Post by: 280sl1968 on July 04, 2010, 22:59:24
My windows go up and down no problem. With the door open and the windows up there is significant 'play' in the windows (i.e. inwards/outwards movement relative to the car). When I am cleaning the windows etc with the door open, I feel I have to hold the window steady with one hand for fear of breaking it.

I have always assumed this is normal because the windows are frameless and some movement is needed to ensure a good fit against the seals.

Is this normal or should I be investigating further?

Thanks

David

The play is not normal and needs investigating further.

There are 2 diecast guides glued to the bottom ends of the glass which run in tracks.
The glue deteriorates over time and the guides fall off. You will probably find them lying on the bottom of the door.
They can be glued back and the play 'finely adjusted. Note: The guides are glued to the glass. The screws are for adjusting play on the tracks, not for holding the guides to the glass.

See wiki for full details on how to go about this.

There is a similar thread above on door glass.

i had the same problem. like naj said its the 2 guides that fell off the window. take your window out and epoxy the guides back on. pretty easy job and gives you peace of mind with a window that doesnt flap around.

I had the same problem, surprisingly one guide was missing (could not find it), the other loose. Try Dave Gallon (board member) for parts, prices are good, and honest. He helped me with the parts and plastic guides. Two hours and it is as good as new.

When doing this job, is it worth thinking about replacing the seal on the A-pillar (front edge of the window when up) and/or the seal along the top of the door through which the window slide?

If so, does anyone have part numbers handy?

I can't see this task on the Wiki....
Thanks

Hi, Tosh,

Try this:

http://www.sl113.org/wiki/ChassisBody/Windows

Parts list at top of discussion.

The 115 725 0965 seal strip (on top of the door) comes in 2 metre lengths. 2 strips will do both windows, inside and out.

The 'A' post seal can be changed later if still serviceable

Thanks Naj

I saw the list but linking what things are called/what they do is not a strength of mine!
