Title: Ashtray lid color
Post by: gugel on March 08, 2003, 16:37:57
The interior of my 230SL is cognac leather.  However, in the center wood tray, the ashtray (which I believe to be original) has black leather or vinyl in the lid.  Is this correct?

My ash tray lid matches the steering wheel center pad and the little inserts on the window cranks.  These are not at all the same color as the leather, but they all match.  Do yours?

My 1964 230SL has code 219 Natural Light leather like Rodd's but it is a US car.  The horn pad, window crank trim, and ashtray cover are all black.  I think there should also be a matching black leather insert on the inside of the center wood tray.  I have seen several SL's that had carpet inside the wood tray - but I am not sure this is original.

richard,

your setup is correct for a 230 SL. vinyl insert in the center console -- not carpet.

My car which is dark olive with cognac leather interior came with a light color to the ashtray lid that matched the window winders that matched the underside of the hardtop.  I have since used matching cognac leather to match it with the interior.  I also redid the visors to match the cognac color as my hardtop is seldon on and yes I know the light beige was original, but they look much better with the top down in the cognac color.  Now all items are cognac.  ps my center tray is finished wood but I do have a carpet cut out to fit it that matches the carpet used in the car.
