Title: 009 vs 010 Distributor
Post by: bpossel on December 13, 2008, 22:16:41
Hi All!

My 280SL has a manufacture date of 6/70, and has distributor 0 231 185 009.  I have always had trouble getting my timing set correctly.

With a manufacture date of 6/70, and according to our Technical Manual, it should have distributor 0 231 185 010.
The table in our manual indicates that the "009" replaced the "051" up until 1969.  The "010" replaced the "062 & 067" up until 1970 (later 280sl's, like mine).

The timing is different for the "051 & 009" verses the "062, 067 & 010".

Do I have the wrong distributor?  Is our manual wrong? Do I set the timing according to the 009?  With my car being a later 280sl with all of the emission control "crap", maybe this is why I am having some issues with this 009?

Any comments, advice?

Thank you!
Bob  :)

Hello, Bob,

With all the emissions stuff and transistorised ignition removed, what coil and ballast resistor(s) are you using?

I believe the 051 or its replacement 009 shud work OK. I say that because the non US cars had 051 fitted till the end of production. I believe the 009 was produced later on as a replacement for the 051.

Hi Naj!

Since I am running Pertronix II, I am using the Pertronix Coil and no ballast resistors.

My next question is timing.  If the 009 is the correct distributor, I should then be setting the timing according to the "051", not the "062" correct? Idle at 2 (+-2), 1500rpm at 12-19 and 30 at 3000rpm.

Thanks!
Bob

Yes, I would try that. I set at 30 btdc at 3k rpm and see what I get at 1500 and with vac at idling.
They are the correct settings for 051/009.

good luck!
