Post by: nealkeith on December 12, 2008, 18:59:38
Hello everybody I have a 65 230 SL and I am looking for a good used hard top. What should I pay?
Thanks in advance.

from $200 for a rusty one to $3000 for a perfect original or totally restored one. You should be able to find a very good one for US $1000.

There's one on ebay now that ends in 24 hours.  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p3907.m32&_trkparms=tab%3DWatching&item=110323771440&viewitem=

Local pickup only, looks pretty nice in pictures.

From what I can tell, 107 hardtops seem to be worthless.

Come on Scott, maybe you can make yours into a coffee table, or wall art or something.  ;D

Well, if I leave the 107 hardtop upside-down on the dining room table, the cat likes to sleep in it.  Perhaps it's supposed to be a cat bed.    So I have an off-topic question (apologies) about 107 hardtops -- they have a wire coming out the back side assumedly for defrosting, but no lines in the back glass.  How does this work?

scoot - there is a very fine wire mesh sandwiched in the glass - don't know how well it works as I haven't had mine out in bad weather.

The one on ebay scoot mentioned could turn out to be a very good buy if the current bid (352.00 with 4 hours left) does  not go up too far, assuming you are local to it of course. looks to be in good shape. Adsit also seems to have some available in their catalog but last time I looked they were asking 1,700.00 plus shipping.

It will be interesting to see what this one goes for. I agree it looks pretty good. In Europe and the UK this would go for in excess of $2000 I think.

Prices over here for good tops are high, probably because so many have rusted away. Even really crappy ones will get over $1K.

The one on eBay went for $435.  Since it's a local pickup, I kind of assume it's someone within a few hundred miles of Los Angeles, but I suppose there could be a shipper involved.  There are 7 unique bidders, I assume that some of them are forum members.  So fess up folks, who bid on the hardtop and who got it and how is it?  I wanted to go look at it on Saturday but my spouse was not interested.  Probably because of last time when I came home with the 107 hardtop / cat bed....   (I only wanted to go look at it because my 113 hardtop doesn't have wood and I thought it might sell for less than new wood)  (no jokes about "has wood" please).
