I searched here some and did not see anything on this exact problem. Today my hood release did not work, hood would not budge when I moved the lever. Of course driving home, it popped up :D
I looked under the hood at the cable and noticed there is a "channel" type clip, pretty small, attached to it. This clip was not attached to anything else, just the cable. There is a fold in the clip where it seems it would hold by tension to something else in order to provide guidance to the cable. I attached to something nearby but it will not hold, and of course the lever will not work the cable again to release the latch. I'll try to get a picture, but was wondering if anyone else has a picture of this clip and where it is supposed to attach?

There should be a small cylinder (flat on 2 sides) on the end of the cable. This fits into the release handle. Once the small cylinder is seated properly in the handle, the small clip locks the cable in place.
It may be that the cylinder end has broken off the end of the cable? Either way, you need to remove the release handle (2 screws, bolts) in order to reattach.

Thanks Bob! I will check those items tonight. I will try to get a picture loaded too. The cable ends seem fine, and the release does "work" from the standpoint that the cable moves, but there is too much slack now because it appears somewhere along the cable this channel or guide rail clip has come detached from something. I'll get a picture which will hopefully help.

If the lever is still in tact you can easily order on line a new release cable. I had issues with my 65 230SL release cable but also more serious issues with the hood bracket and screws that holds everyhting in place but if it's only the cable....that is not a big item...Here is one vendor that has the cable. Good luck... Matt

Thank you for the lead; I have been super-busy lately but meant to post a picture of what I am looking at. I'm not sure if I need a new cable or if there is just something about the way mine is installed but the picture should clarify that.
