Title: Automatic transmission linkage
Post by: menesesjesse on September 05, 2008, 11:30:23
Hello all. My linkage bushing popped off and I ordered 1 from Buds Benz.  I went to install it but I see the shape of it is different on each side.  I installed it to what I that was correct but after 10 cycles of the lever the linkage popped off again.  The bushing is intact but I tried to reverse but looks like it will need a lot of physical motivation to work the bushing through the other way.  Does someone have a picture of its correct installation? I think I had it backwards but I am afraid to exerting too much pressure on the bushing without the right knowledge.  Thanks

Hello Menesesjesse,

Try heating the bushing with a hair dryer, or soak it in hot water and it will become a lot more pliable. I use a vice and a socket to press the busing into the linkage rod before installation. When installing the linkage onto the transmission  the small diameter goes over the ball on the linkage first, locking the linkage on the ball.

The hot water did the trick.  I got her back together and now I can start her without fear of going through the garage.  Thanks for the help.]
