Take some pics of the packaged wipers and then of the unwrapped blades themselves so we can all check them out.

I've seen them on eBay from time to time.  The seller is located in Crete.

Some wiper arms are chrome and some are satin.  I've heard that the wiper arms and the rearview mirror mounting arm should both be the same; either both chrome or both satin.  I have a '70 280SL Euro; my mirror arm is chrome, my wiper arms are satin... so I'm thinking I should find chrome arms to match the mirror.  Does this sound correct?

Thanks,

Craig

I've never seen a mirror that was satin.  Only chrome or black.

Scott,

Maybe you're right, but I heard this from a reliable W113 source.  I'm piece I'm referring to is the mounting arm that hold the rearview mirror to the windshield frame.  Were these ever finished satin?

U.S. bound cars lost some of the chrome due to regulations.  An example would be the horn ring which is chrome on a non US spec car.

So would euro spec cars have chrome wiper arms?

I have never seen that piece in satin, nor the back of the mirror itself.  I have only seen it in chrome or black.  That's not to say it doesn't exist....   My understanding is that the mirror switched from chrome to black for DOT reasons, probably sometime in the 280 SL lifecycle.

Again, I think that this has to do with what year the change took place.  My 1967 car has a chrome horn ring and it is a US car...

You've got me on that one.  I don't know why some cars have chrome wiper arms and some have satin.  I believe that they switched to black eventually (or at least for the wiper blade holders).   I have chrome.  (But I'm looking for the chrome caps that cover the nuts that attach the linkage to the firewall -- the replacement ones from MB are black plastic)

Hi,

I purchased a pair of arman blades some months ago. These replaced blades that had a painted silver finish. The armans appear to be a good quality stainless finish and are much better looking than the painted version.

I question one item in the Silverstar listing of changes linked by Hauser. It says headrests were added in January of 1968.

Every 68 I have seen, including my own, does not have headrests. January 69 maybe?

My 280SL was production # 1906 USA version built in  February 1968. No chrome wiper blades and the neck of the rear view mirror was also satin silver. Now here is the kicker in Europe this same year car came with chrome wiper arms and blades.
I would like to locate some replacement arms with blades in the satin silver made by Bosch or a good knock off. any suggestions who to contact?

Bob's example seems to substantiate my current theory that while all Euro versions came with chrome blades and mirror arm, US versions, for safety reasons in about '68, changed to satin wiper blades and a satin rearview mirror arm.  Is there any evidence that conflicts with this theory?

And while Bob is looking for satin armes, I'm interested in finding chrome arms.  Ideas for sources for both of these?

Bob Geco,
You can order the ss/satin finish arms and blades from MB, they are still a stock item.

I have a message in to the Classic Center regarding the availability of chrome or stainless or satin wiper arms and wiper blades.  I'll post the results when I get them, including price and part numbers if available.

I had enough of the high prices of these items...so I took a pair of black ones, took them apart, preped them and painted it a flat silver.  I sprayed at least 5 layers of spray paint and they came out looking good. I don't drive in the rain so hopefully they will last a while untill somebody can mass produce this stuff with the right color at a good price.

I would like to contribute to this thread to clarify that Euro 280SLs did NOT have shiny chrome wipers. The 280SL wiper arms and blades had a matte finish on all models, US and Euro.

Douglas,

Thanks for your clarification on the wiper arms.  I'll keep the satin arms.
