Title: Underneath...
Post by: JamesL on August 14, 2008, 07:51:44
I can't help but notice that some of you have cars the same colour on top as underneath. My initial reaction would be... where's the rustproofing? Not that MB provided much of that 40 years ago.

What are you using? I have goold old fashioned tar coloured waxoyl under my car. I gather they do a clear version. Anyone any experience?

I have heard that you can get wheel arch liners made up for old 911s - this stops water gathering behind their headlights (sound familiar?). Anyone come across anything similar for the 113?

Thanks

Yes, there is a company in Germany that makes them for the front arches. You missed them at Essen!!

I know that in my case the previous owner removed (solvents) the cosmoline, root beer colored, waxy undercoating because he thought it ugly.  However, the heavier undercoating that is painted remains underneath, in the fender wells and on the fender lips.

As a side note, observe the rocker panels.  They are grey (never touched) over the black painted underbody.

Just had a nose on the DDK forum and found what I was looking for...

http://www.lokari.de/en/innenkotfluegel.php? They do a 113 liner.

John, thanks for the reply. But will you please stop showing off the underside of your car. It's making me jealous!!!![:p]

Hey Tosh, I could turn your jealousy into nausea if I showed you my undercarriage!

Ok --  maybe its not that bad but I do have a layer of some kind of rubberized stuff on there. It looks more dark grey than root beer. In the wheel wells it is starting to peel off. I have thought about "spackling" the missing areas and spray painting it white...but that would wrong on so many levels!

I may be able to help here.  I believe the gray undercoating is 3M Autobodyshutz which was sold to Mercedes in large quantities and I believe is still available. It has solids in it which give the ruffed appearance. There is a spray can version but I don't know if it has the solids in it.  there is a special applicator (spray device) for the original stuff.
