I'm looking to acquire the spare parts list which I've seen referenced while searching through some past topics in the forums. On a number of topics it seems to indicate the spare parts list is specific to the 230 SL, is that so or is it accurate for a 280 SL also?
I sent an email to the classic center asking about buying one but the gentleman that responded to me seems to be telling me I should buy the CD with the workshop manual and a "parts catalog" .....is the "parts catalog" on the CD the same document as the "spare parts list" which as I understand it has illustrations of the parts with part numbers?
Based on what I've read here it does not seem as if it is the same thing but then again I've never seen the spare parts list so if someone could clarify I'd appreciate it.

The parts catalog only has labeled pictures of the parts. This was the little owner's manual sized book in the owner's pouch. The idea was that owners would call or write to MB with the specific page number and part label on that page, and MB would sell them the part.
The dealer parts list is a more complete catalog with pictures and full part numbers for every single part in the car. These were only available to authorized MB dealers and came in book or microfiche format. Something similar to this is currently available through the MB online EPC (electronic parts catalog) subscription. However, I vastly prefer my parts lists on paper. Used dealer copies occasionally pop up on flea-bay (where I got most of mine).
The 230SL dealer parts book includes both engine and body (presumably because the M127 II engine was only used in the 230SL). This book can be hard to find.
The 250SL and 280SL engine and body parts books are separate. This is presumably because the M129 and M130 engines were used across the entire fuel-injected product lines, so it made sense to make the catalogs more modular.
Later 250SL and 280SL body parts books are combined for both cars. The 250SL-specific parts in these books are the same for the 230SL. Almost all the rest of the parts are the same across the entire 113 line. The reason people often refer to the 230SL parts book is because the engine parts cannot be found in any other parts list.
Your best bet is the CD workshop manual with parts catalog (no part numbers), plus an online subscription to the EPC (has part numbers).

Just wanted to clarify that the labels I was referring to in the parts catalog are nondescript numbers. Each page has an exploded parts picture, referred to as a "table". E.g. an example of a page from the parts catalog might look like this:

I agree I'd much prefer to use a paper document, I'm hoping I can find one as opposed to using the online source. Looking for things like that online has it's advantages but a paper document is just easier to deal with for my purposes.

Be a bit careful about the 250SL book parts applying to the 230SL. One example that comes to mind is the exhaust headers. These are different on the 230SL, but the later parts book does not make that distinction. There are other differences, on the interior etc. So be a little wary.
There are are two versions of the 230 SL small parts book. I am traveling and do not have the numbers (on the upper right of the cover, 12XXX).

If you haven't already done so, get a subscription to EPC and put in your VIN -- it will be fairly helpful in giving you _mostly_ correct part numbers. The problem with EPC is that it doesn't tell you what is still available. And it is at first rather confusing to use. But it is wonderful for finding parts, and then cross-referencing the parts to see what other cars they were common to.
I have the CD which I tried to use once and found to be rather useless, the 250 SL parts book that doesn't have the MB parts numbers, the big 250 SL dealer parts book that DOES have the numbers, and both Big Blue Books. Start with EPC and the CD and acquire the rest of the docs as they appear on eBay. You might check with Benz55 on eBay.

Now I'm confused? Do you want to know parts for a 230 SL or for a 280 SL? If the answer is to find compatibility between the two, EPC will show you what models a given part number applies to.

Hey Scott,
I'm just looking for the paper document that covers a 280 SL, I agree with your comments about the CD and the EPC is nice but it ain't paper if you know what I mean..... In many cases technology is really great but sometimes you just can't top the paper version.

Mark, keep in mind you'll need both the body and the engine manuals (separate publications).

Thanks Wagas, I noticed the engine parts aren't included in the one I found but that's ok I will look for the one that covers the engine also and use the epc till I do find it. I was happy to find the other so easily.
