Title: Vent levers - how to remove/install?
Post by: scoot on July 20, 2008, 16:30:28
The left and right fresh air vents that are opened and closed by the sliding lever under each of the two vents -- how do you remove / reinstall these levers?  I'm missing one and might be seeing a parts car today and am wondering how to get it out (and reinstall) if it is available....   thanks  Scott

My recollection is that there is a spring catch on top of the lever where it joins the pivot inside. You can release it with a small screwdriver, just insert under the catch and pry up while pulling on the lever.

Unfortunately these threads only mention the question that I'm asking without ever answering it.  All I'm concerned about is the black pastic lever.  I don't want to take out the vent unless necessary.  Does the lever just slide in (with some sort of spring or something) or does the vent have to be removed/dismanteled in order to replace the black plastic lever?

The vent does not have to be removed, although it is easier if you've already got them removed. But removing the vent is a royal PITA. You should be able to get a small screwdriver (I used a large jeweler's screwdriver) in where you see the plastic stick into the metal. Again, only going by recollection here, but there is a spring loaded catch that needs to be pried upward while the lever is pulled out. In the picture provided by 66andBlue, I believe the bright metal part is the catch. Seems like mine was either black or rusty, because I don't recall any bright metal in there.

If the levers don't work with ease, you'll probably want to lube the pivots with a light oil. I used a dry chain lube for bicycles.

No.  They assumedly belong to the cars he has listed in his text (which include 190 SL pagoda) but they do not go to a 113 car regardless of his auction title including 113 in the text.

Since I had to reset the radial chrome vents I took better pictures to show how the lever is kept in place by a pressure clip.
However, it turns out - at least on my car - that the clip does not lock the lever in very firmly and it can be pulled out without the need to release the clip.

Same here, just a firm yet gentle pull and out they pop
