Title: Chrome Clips
Post by: Rolf on July 18, 2008, 10:22:42
I was at a local cruise night when an individual came up to me and told me there was a chrome strip missing. It was on on there before. I guess either someone needed it more than I did or, for some reason it fell off. The only thing left was the one off white clip.  The strip was on the lower rear panel. I got a new strip and some new blue clips. I removed the off white clip and tried to insert a blue one to no avail. I figured the car had to have some body work done and the panel was thicker than it should have been. I decided to try a yellow clip, to no avail. Does anyone have any idea where I can get an off white clip for that hole? I figure the recess in the off white clip is larger than the one in the yellow clip. I could get a blue clip in the other hole.

Maybe there is something in this recent discussion that might help?

When I insert either the yellow clip or the blue clip in the hole they will both go in up to the body of the clip but not "snap" in place. I figure the white one which was there is from a different model car and has a larger "groove" in it which does snap in place.

Hi Rolf,

Where did you get your new strip and at what cost.

I noted that there was a person in Thailand quite often selling them on Ebay some time back but they seem to have disappeared. I need both sides. PO obviously did not like them.
Thanks
Garry

 Hello Garry,

I got the strips from Mercedes Classic Center in California for $48.50 USD a piece. I also got the clips from them. I call them whenever I need a part and go from there.

Hi Rolf,
Just got a quote from Merc Classic Centre for those strips aft of the doors on the rear guards. $282 each plus shipping of about $50. Are we were talking about the same strip. See photo for my missing part.

Hey Garry, it looks like the trim you are missing is the chrome piece behind the wheel that has a rubber insert similar to the upper door piece on your door. I think Rolf's is the lower trim immediately behind door shown in your pic. The ones you need are very pricey -- but they dont require the clips. They screw on. You may be able to find a used pair somewhere -- or hit the hip --SLS shows 164 euros...each! Buds and K&K show $205 US.

Mine were also missing. Picked up a decent used pair, $60 US. Pheww.

Here is another German eBay seller who specializes in chrome parts:

Still not cheap: Euro 150 (incl. VAT)!

You might consider contacting Dan Caron (a.k.a Dr. Benz) as he's currently parting out a car.

Hi Garry,

Sorry I took so lon on answering you. My son is in the hospital so I have been spending my time there. The chorme strip I thought you meant is the lower one in front of the wheel.

No problems Rolf.  Hope everything is ok hospital wise.

I have just paid DaveB for a good second hand pair of the ones I want.  I have resisted for a long time but as I see more of the members photos with the strips on and using the car a lot recently getting photos for the coffee Table Book I have been getting a lot of dirt kicking up on the paintwork and the aft panel and I have decided that I will fit them to stop some of the road grime and also I have come to prefer the look of them on the car.
Your initial post reminded me to do something about it

Last weekend I replaced the rear bottom chrome and the driver door bottom chrome pieces.  Before I ordered the chrome and clips from MB I read and printed off all of the postings on this site that related to chrome.  There was more than ample information and pictures to satisfy even me, who has never done a bit of body work other than detailing.  The pictures were of outstanding value to being able to get the job done and done like an expert.  It took longer to read and print off all of the postings related to the job (because there are quite a few) than it did to do the repair job!  I was confused until I got the parts in my hand and started fooling around with them.  Then with the pictures and information, it all started to make sense.  Email me if you have some questions.
