Title: W113 Dashboard Question

Since I've been the market for a W113 I've noticed that some of the vehicles are equipped with what appear to be rivets or studs for lack of a better description on top of  the dashboard.

I was wondering if during the W113 production run this was an option & what purpose do those metal pieces serve?

I don't think those pins are original or were an official option. They were most likely added by the owner in order to have an MG style cockpit cover.

Eindeutig mega unoriginal.

(Translation: Not stock).

That exercise destroyed the dashbord. Definitely a big minus of that particular car.

Ostkurve,

It is very unusual that 113 SLs come with an MG-like cockpit cover as James states out.
Is this perhaps a "California coupé", i.e. a car with rear seat bench but without softtop compartment?

Correctamundo. Originals dont have them. But a lot of cali coupes have had the added.

Hi,

Not sure from the picture if those knobs are original or not, but if original it would be the low part of the Tenax buttons as found on Mercedes 111/112 convertibles to fasten the "Verdeckpersenning" - soft top cover. I've seen a few pagodas with these  buttons, and always believed it would be original, since I know for sure that the Tonneau cover was a factory option that could be ordered for the W111/W112 convertibles. I would be surprised if it was impossible for a customer to order a Tonneau cover for his pagoda.

...talk about an invasive procedure...my goodness!  You can do a cockpit cover w/o so much damage today.  But those Tenax fasteners are kind of quaint!
