I have replaced the bushings shifter bushings included the bushings on the forward end of the shift tube. I still get quite a bit of horizontal or left-right play at the base of the shift lever. There is also a bit of up/down play, but not too much. I am wondering if I am missing a piece, I noticed part number 14 in the diagram, and I don't remember seeing this at all when I did the bushings. It's difficult for me to tell where that piece is placed in relation to the others from this diagram, or what it attaches to if anything. Any tips greatly appreciated.

BP,
#14 packs around the metal carrier plate #11/#12

That would make sense to me because the carrier plate seems to just be "floating" or simply resting in place. As for #11 and #12, are these older/newer versions of the same part, or should I have both? (1965 230sl). Thank you.

Change over from #11 to #12 was at chassis # 14258 on the 230 SL.
1965 was probly below Ch 14258?

Thank you for clearing that up too. The service bulletin I have which describes a change (but not anything about the piece I am missing) is dated November '65 (Job 26-25). My chassis is 009988, rolled off March 29, 1965.

There are stabiliser rods that go from the back of the trans to the plate that the shift rod sits in. Check them for missing or worn bushings. Some trans shifters are loose inside of the box - nothing you can (easily) do to fix that.

I just replaced the shift lever bushings on my car, too. I later found a diagram that describes a "corrugated washer", but I can't tell from diagram what it is or where it goes. Do you know? What is its purpose? Shifter seems to work great, but I'm concerned that I missed this piece on reassembly.

Hello, Drake,
The "corrugated washer" fits under the snap ring and holds the two spherical ball bushes together.

Thank you all! I just got the part (#14) and that solved it all!! Oh well, at least I took care of the bushings while I was at it.

Thank you - I did check those out, and I do think that was part of the problem too. All I found at the transmission end of those was large metal washers which did not even fit the screw shafts properly [:0]. I put in the right bushings.
