I was at the classic center Friday and received a tour from Tom Hansen. He showed me the 250SL they just sold for $95K
-
Daryl,
Sounds great. This may have been in a previous post I missed but what special attributes did that 250SL have that allowed it to command that price? Must have been a very fine original specimen with much documentation.

Interesting. I was at the Classic Center two weeks ago. I don't know the name of the man who took me around. They had just sold a 250 SL that I saw, but I think I was told $75,000 -- a light metalic green one with a green soft top. Same car? Also they had just purchased a low-mileage 280 SL (red) that they were going to do the most minor of work to and re-sell. I don't know what they paid for the car, but I did see "Fantasy Junction" paper plates on the floor inside the car. I checked Fantasy Junction's website, but didn't find the car.
They guy at the Classic Center told me "we are a business, we have to make money". I think they make money on scouting for good deals and flipping them sometimes, and other times in restoration. But I think they make a lot more when they find a car like the Fantasy Junction car and flip it.
Finally, unless you are going in to buy parts, if you are going to the Classic Center you probably don't care how much a car costs for purchase or restoration...

I remember the green 250. It was purchased on eBay by the Classic Center in the neighborhood of $40K.
-
Well all for the best really....if they can buy the cars and resell them at a premium it likely helps the value of our cars in the long run so I say more power to them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this metallic light green 250SL is pictured on our main sl113.org web-page.

I believe that is the same car I saw 9 days ago. Depending on how recent the photo on the main web page is, the white, red, and green cars might have all been cars that I saw. The blue car I didn't see.

Yes, it is indeed the car on our front page. Here are some threads tracing it's history until it was eventually purchased by the Classic Centre:

The saga continues for Peter Gick's thistle green 250SL!

These cars are becoming more and more desirable. I recently ran into a big time car collector who owns more than 60+cars who is itching for a premo Pogada.
And as the US dollar weakens and oil prices go up so do the price of the Pagodas.

Don't know if it's the angle of the photograph or maybe my screen resolution but the whitewalls on this car look much wider then I am use to seeing. Are they correct? were whitewalls offered in multiple sizes as an option? Great looking car though.

$95k?!!! for an automatic?... and 250SL? What's the world coming to... and still with the wrong lighter? or was that fixed in the meantime? and non-W113 color? I'm guessing the cars sold by the Classic Center get bumped up by 30% just because it's sponsered/sold by the MB Classic Center.
I'm a happy camper though... if a 250SL Automatic #2 grade can sell for $95k at Classic Center, even if the price is bumped by 30% over some other venue for the sale, it's still a $65k value. Maybe by the time I hand my 250SL manual over to my daughter --- say another 15 years from now, it'll be recognized for it's value as having all the chrome / glitz of the 230SL with all the mechanical improvements used in the 280SL. Besides... only just under 5200 of the 250SL's were mfg'ed... and less than half of these were built as "early" models... before making the changes for Dot and other dressed-down changes incorporated ultimately in the 280SL's.
True confession: I'm an early 250SL bigot... because I think these are the cream of the crop of SL's... glitz and glitter of the 230SL with all the mechanical improvements used later in the 280SL's.
Anybody know the VIN of the $95k 250SL?... last 4 digits?

Compare 95K to 24K.

that white car is upsetting as it looks pretty good (aside form the wood grain glove box cover) for that price. This could devalue all our cars
of course photos are one thing up close and personal is another. Also how many times has the german sheppard slobbered on the passenger seat

I think the classic centre "premium" was closer to 50%, if not higher...

I searched for the item via ebay rather than the link using the item number in the link and found the car. The seller has zero feedback, perhaps it is a phishing thing. Anyway, the link I got to by searching for the item within ebay is:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180246850474&ru=http://motors.search-completed.ebay.com:80/180246850474_W0QQa10239ZQ2d24QQa39ZQ2d24QQalistZa39Q2ca41Q2ca38v1yQ2ca38v2yQ2ca10239Q2ca3801Q2ca85Q2ca10246Q2ca33512Q2ca10241Q2ca10244Q2ca39705Q2ca18QQdfspZ32QQfisZ2QQfposZ91001QQfromZR7QQfrppZ50QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQgcsZ13QQpf_queryZ180246850474QQpfidZ2473QQsacatZQ2d100QQsadisZ500QQsofindtypeZ22QQsofocusZpfQQfviZ1
I realize that this is a very strange link. You can also go to ebay and do an advanced search for completed auctions, auction id 180246850474

The white 250SL, automatic that sold on E-Bay for $24k with 34k miles on it.... why would it be in need "full restoration" in '84(new interior/paint/& chrome) with only 27k original miles on it at that time? '67 to '84 with 27k miles averages ~1,600 miles/year over the 17 year period.... and it was "garaged all it's life" and "never been driven in the rain". I note the brake fluid reservior's color (aging)... doesn't look nearly as clear and is far more yellowed than mine which was original when I bought it in '84 with 101k miles on it... so I might believe 127k miles on the white one in '84, but not 27k.
I note the VIN is listed as 11304312111408 which would indicate a 250SL chassis number 111,408! If we discount the first 2 of the last 6 digits (11) as erroneous --- should be 00 on any 250SL since only 5196 were produced, then it's chassis number 1408... an early 250SL. It has, however, the 280SL one-piece wheel covers, a 280SL exterior driver's side mirror, a much more padded, rounded front edge upper dash than I've seen on any pre-280SL, and the orange lower portion of headlights below the sealed beam, all of which are not early 250SL accoutrement... or 250SL versions at all. So, if the restoration was done in '84 with a car that had only 27k original miles on it, then why replace wheel covers, headlights, usa a 280SL fully padded upper dash construction, and a 280SL drivers side mirror. The restoration in '84 with changed out 250SL accutrement for 280SL version features could be due to the restoration wanting to mimic those 280SL features of course... not uncommon, but would not be necessary for a car with only 27k miles on it that was "always garaged".
Did you notice the speedo mileage now shows 08628.. definitely not 38628. Funny stuff shows up on E-bay.

Just tried it again and now the McAfee is ok with the link.

... so I might believe 127k miles on the white one in '84, but not 27k.
This is a common faux pas in the UK.
