Title: BA 9 Instrument Bulbs 4 watts..where to buy
Post by: abe280SL on May 03, 2008, 22:31:53
I like to upgrade from the 2 to the 4 watts bulb in the instrument panel.  Do you purchase these at the dealer, radio shack, or internet vender?
thanks in advance

Abe:
I have bought BA9 in 4 W [HL78223] from: http://www.rallylights.com/
About $0.80 each - shipping is more than the bulbs!

What about the tiny 2W BA7s bulbs [78180]?

I believe they illuminate the heater levers, or perhaps the blower control knob - I don't quite remember - but I know that I needed 2 of them.

Thanks.

The BA9 12V/4W bulb is Osram-Sylvania 3893.

Wow, nice work Waqas. Thank you. BTW, any one know if that bulb is the same one that serves as a parking light on the euro headlamp assembly?

Yes.
But I use 5 watt halogen in the headlamps. I like the whiter light.

Glad you all found them (the BA-7's that is for the levers...)

When I was rebuilding my car 1999-2001, and had the heater lever assembly out, I decided to replace the lamps at that time with new.  The Mercedes dealer in my town had just opened--their parts department was a large empty room, with 2 shelves in the back--with what I assumed were oil filters etc. for late model MB's.  I went to "order" said lamps.  Lo and behold, in this brand-new dealer that had essentially zero parts inventory, they had the lamps on that shelf!

Even the cashier was amazed that a Mercedes part cost less than $1.00! :o

Thanks Naj. I am not quite sure what I have in there now. I do know that I have yet to figure out why my true european parking lights do no not work. You know, the clicks to the left of the headlamp switch used for narrow night-time parking -- left or right. The small BA9s come on with one click to the right as they should but nada to the left. Another thread I 'spose.

Well, whilst we're OT already... the European clearance lights have a separate bulb in the lower section, alongside the foglamp. I think they have a BA15 base.

Hmm. So maybe I am missing the bulbs for this function. My lower foglamps work -- but I am sure that is the only bulb I have down there. I believe I have a total of four: the big guy, the little guy, the turn signal at the top and the foglamp at the bottom.

On some early cars, the clearance lights may not be wired up at the light switch?
Yes, bulbs are BA15 5watt

Back to the 4 watters for a second. What is the likelihood that higher wattage will harm the rheostat, etc? I'd hate to give up one small problem for a bigger one (again!)...

Does anyone know where I can buy the socket/holder for the BA9 lamps?
The ones in my rev.counter are non-original and flimsy plastic. :'(
